Police arrested 29 people yesterday during a protest in front of Chevron’s headquarters in San Ramon.

The group Mobilization for Climate Justice West, a network of organizations and activists who promote solutions to climate change, gathered on Bollinger Canyon Road between Sunset Drive and the Iron Horse Trail at about 7 a.m., police said.

Demonstrators were protesting what they say are efforts by Chevron to undermine the fight against global warming.

Protesters were demanding that the oil giant “end its practices of community destruction, climate pollution and interfering with climate policy solutions,” according to Mobilization for Climate Justice West.

The group pointed out a recent report from the California Air Resources Board that found that Chevron’s refinery in Richmond was the No. 1 greenhouse gas emitter in the state.

The protest came on the first day of the United Nations climate change conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Konrad Fisher, with Mobilization for Climate Justice West, said that about 100 protesters attended the rally.

According to police, eight of the 29 people arrested were booked into county jail. The remaining 21 people were cited and released. They were all arrested for allegedly blocking and obstructing streets, trespassing and remaining present at the place of an unlawful assembly after receiving orders to disperse, police said. Nobody was hurt during the demonstration, police said.

Chevron spokesman Sean Comey said the company continues to work hard to protect the environment and increase efficiency, which ultimately reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

“We welcome constructive criticism, but a lot of what we’re hearing today from the demonstrators is inaccurate and misleading,” Comey said.

He said the protest did not disrupt operations at Chevron’s headquarters.

  1. How nutty. This global warming cause has become a religion for people like this…In spite of scandal and much evidence to the contrary, including snowing this year in Livermore, these nuts waste their time on such an unworthy cause. Cheveron employs many people here and we should support them as a strong employer and for the jobs they create, instesd of throwing rocks at them…

The delusion that man made global warming is having catestophic effects on our planet is not proven and is a lot hysteria about nothing…I say, drill baby, drill!

  2. The protest caused quite a traffic backup on Bollinger Canyon Road, as well as the 680 freeway and other connecting streets. This caused many commuters and busses to stand idling for long periods of time, adding to the carbon dioxide released. So the protesters added to their culprit for global warming…

  3. Not only is Global Warming not proven, the hacking of the East Anglica website has led to the realization that a number of “environmental scientists” have been fudging the numbers, knowingly publishing false information, blackballing dissenting views from publication, and morally heinous attacks on their “enemies”. The really troubling part is that the motivation seems to have little to do with saving the environment and much to do with socialists gaining control of governments, eliminating capitalism, and taking over the Western democracies.

  4. For this topic I’ll be putting on my prognosticating hat 1st…

2010 will go down as the year that the entire “global warming/climate change” movement is finally shown for what they truly are. A bunch of liars, phonies, global elitists & socialists! When scientists do not even allow for a contradicting viewpoint to their studies it invalidates the entire point of the scientific method & research based studies. There are over 2000 scientists, geologists, meteorologists & the like that have signed up to the contrary view of “global warming” & their statements, studies & viewpoints have been summarily silenced by the media & the “Algorists” out there.

Time for a nice fire in the fireplace today!

  5. This doesn’t even bear discussion any more. The hacked emails do not reveal any conspiracy. They do, however, reveal that people with a presumption of privacy are likely to say anything at all, just like they do in these comment forums. The preponderance of evidence still points to climate change around the world. Snow in the Livermore hills proves nothing. Weather and climate are not the same thing, and the decade of 2000-2009 is coming out as the warmest on record around the globe. Snow in the hills on one day is weather. Drought across the western states for the past four years is climate. The people with their heads in the sands about this serve only to line the pockets of corporate interests who profit by consuming our precious life-sustaining resources.

  6. HHR,

You need to read the book “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder” and send a copy to your 100 favorite left-wing loons. Loons just love hurling a multitude of names, ostriches and tea-baggers seem to be popular these days. We are fine with calling left-wing loons by just one name, “loons” (at least in polite company). Although, I must say I like my newly coined word, Enviro-Loons. Enviro-Loons may want to have Al Gore as their mascot – clearly not an ostrich, but he really does resemble a big bloated vulture.

  7. HHR,

Did you hear that Al Gore was planning on charging $1200 to anyone that wanted to shake his hand at the Helsinki enviro-loon gathering? Called it off when the got some pointed feedback from fellow enviro-loons. Likely he was disheartened by so many uses of the word “pig” in just a few days time.

BTW, were you one of the enviro-loons our protesting at Chevron?

  8. Temperature variations before the industrial revolution can reliably be traced to variations in such things as the solar cycle. Most notably, the “little Ice Age” in the mid 18th century, during which Europe experienced extremely cold winters for several years. The cycle has been observed in fossil records going back many hundreds of years.

The current warming trend, however, does not correlate with any observable change in solar activity. It is also much more dramatic and rapid than any specific historical event and correlates directly with the deposit of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere by human activity.

Scientists are not denying that there is a natural variation in atmospheric temperatures due to many external and internal effects (such as volcanic eruptions). However, the current warming trend can not be explained away simply by using studies of natural trends. There is nothing natural in the system that creates such dramatic warming trends.

The system is complex, which is something both sides of the argument agree upon. There is no simple answer, and no single observation (i.e. snow in Livermore) can confirm or discredit the overall trend in observations that the world is getting warmer, the atmosphere contains far more heat-trapping greenhouse gasses than at any time in recorded history, and that dramatic evidence of warming is already happening.

  9. Interesting how one can complain about how the left wing likes to call names by calling them “loons” and “Enviro-Loons”.

I guess irony wasn’t your strong suit.

  10. Why are those that care about the quality of the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the complex interdependent web of the natural world called “loons”? Seems to me that those that continue to pollute and deny global climate change are the real loons.
