Executives from Pleasanton’s largest employer celebrated the opening of a sustainable office building that will house 450 employees Wednesday.

Safeway’s latest corporate office building at 11555 Dublin Canyon Road, less than a mile from its other corporate offices on Stoneridge Mall Road, underwent an extensive renovation since it was purchased from Farmer’s Insurance Group.

Green features such as natural and energy-efficient lighting, a new heating and air conditioning system, bamboo flooring and recycled glass were implemented.

Mayor Jennifer Hosterman lauded Safeway for helping put Pleasanton on the map, saying “we know you are our bread and butter,” and said the city aims to provide more workforce housing for employees as the country comes out of the recession.

Other office amenities include a fitness center, cafe, wireless Internet, lactation room for new mothers and a transgender restroom.

  1. Most interesting. 2600 Camino Ramon was built many, many years ago with similar features. Natural and energy-efficient lighting, smart window blinds, and air conditioning assisted by the lakes around the facility. All are now in disrepair because SBC (now AT&T) felt “green” and proper building maintenance was a waste of precious revenue (read that to mean Executive Bonuses).

AT&T advertises it’s products and services as a means to support
distributed/remote work for it’s consumers. Yet only 8% of AT&T’s management population has been formally approved to telecommute on a full- or part-time basis. So much for “green.”

Think about both companies as you stand in a check-out line yackin’ on your AT&T Wireless phone and decide which one you’d rather support. If you need a little more insight , read this article via the http://sanfrancisco.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/stories/1998/03/23/story1.html and think about the number of job losses the Tri-Valley has seen as more and more work moves to Texas and Georgia. Yeah, text away as you slam Safeway.

  2. I am so glad they put all that effort into making the building run efficiently. One more step in the right direction would be turning the lights off after closing. I drive past there every night on my way home and every single night and weekend, the building is lit up like the fourth of July.

  3. Now maybe they can put some money into the “Dump” on Santa rita Road. When that store reopened it was really nice. It has degraded to the point that even Wal Mart looks better. Fat slobbery managers, cashiers that look more dead than alive and poor service to boot. People should really complain about the state of his stor. The dublin and Livermore stores are much nicer.

  4. A “transgender restroom”? This person [http://tinyurl.com/yzte6gs] and this person [http://tinyurl.com/ykk7thz] are both transgender. Do you really think that they have more in common with each other than with non-trans women and men, respectively?

Trans people use the restroom for exactly the same reasons as anyone else. It’s insulting to suggest that they should be segregated away from “ordinary” people. It’s discriminatory to require them to use a restroom other than the one that corresponds to the gender in which they live.

  5. I work in this building and I think the “trans-gender” restroom is misunderstood. From what I understand, it’s a restroom that anyone can use (not just assigned to one specific sex) however I’d be too embarassed to use it since most people expect someone like Rupaul to walk out of the restroom.

  6. A transgender restroom? GIVE ME A BREAK! Is this what it takes to be so-called “Green”? When will the bleeding heart Liberals realize that they do NOT represent THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA? Enough is enough — TOO much is TOO much!!

  7. i guess as long as safeway ripped off another charity to pay for that. i wonder when the government and everyone else will wake up to see how crooked steve burd is. the guy is nothing but a white collar crook.

  8. Steve Burdis a liar and a cheat. He is making employees pay more out of pocket for health care. Making emloyees think twice about going to their doctor. He says it’s to motivate employees to live healthier lives. Hmmm let’s see. Pay insurance companies more money for something you can’t use until you come up with the first 4500.00 bucks. So you better pray hard that your children don’t get sick or you will be paying many bills. How’s your health care package Steve?

  9. I work at Safeway. The place seems as if Castro is running the show. A 76,000 square foot store and only 2 guys to stock the grocery aisles every night. Every night. Holiday season too. Thanks a lot Steve. Jerk.
