The driver of a sport utility vehicle was hospitalized and arrested for drunken driving Friday after allegedly crashing into a tow truck that was stopped on the shoulder of Interstate Highway 680 in Danville, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

CHP units responded to southbound Highway 680 just north of Diablo Road to a report of crash on the right-hand shoulder at around 1 a.m., CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.

A preliminary CHP report indicated that a AAA Roadside Assistance tow truck had stopped on the highway shoulder to assist a stranded motorist, Van Eckhardt said.

The driver of a gold SUV traveling south apparently lost control off the vehicle, causing it to spin out and crash into the back of the tow truck.

The SUV driver was taken to John Muir Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries, Van Eckhardt said. During a medical evaluation the driver was determined to be under the influence and arrested for DUI.

The AAA truck driver and the motorist requesting service were not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
