Quick thinking led some local Pleasanton teenagers to help save eight ducklings that fell into a stormdrain in Vintage Hills Tuesday.

Vintage Hills resident Diana Mendenhall said the incident happened near her house when some teens walking by heard the ducklings chirping in distress, having fallen into a storm sewer drain. Using their cell phones, Mendenhall said they contacted Pleasanton police, who sent animal control officer Roy Ficken and another control officer for the rescue.

The mother mallard, watching the incident unfold, quacked loudly as the officers scooped the ducklings up in a net and transferred them to a basket, slowly taking them up the street with the mallard following behind. The babies were released in Arbor Park and scampered with their mother into some bushes.
