Alameda County and Berkeley public health officials said Friday they’ve identified five East Bay residents with the omicron variant of COVID-19.
The patients, said to be mildly symptomatic, were among 12 COVID cases linked to a Nov. 27 wedding in Wisconsin, which one person attended after traveling internationally.
The announcement comes just two days after the first case of omicron in the United States was reported in San Francisco, in a person who recently returned from South Africa, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.
A state lab used genomic sequencing to identify the five East Bay cases. The sequencing has not been completed for all 12 cases.
The 12 people, all of whom had been vaccinated and most of whom had received boosters, are between the ages of 18 and 49. One lives in Berkeley, and the rest are from elsewhere in Alameda County.
Alameda County and the City of Berkeley Public Health Departments are investigating the cases along with the California Department of Public Health. People who have come into close contact with the group are being notified and given advice on quarantining.
It’s unknown how omicron will impact highly vaccinated regions such as the Bay Area, but it’s believed that being vaccinated continues to provide the best protection against severe illness from COVID-19 that could result in hospitalization and death.

Joe – yes I do.
But what’s more concerning, is its the Democrats perpetuating the “Trump really won the election campaign” – look at the last Ca recall. Newsom didn’t speak on the issues, he just pointed to “Trump supporters” trying to take him down…..when over half the recall votes were from non Republicans.
Democrats are pointing at Trump after they won….Trump has been kicked off most if not all social media platforms, he gets barely any airtime……but its still Trumps fault they can’t move forward with what they have total control and ability to achieve? Come on.
Stop the charade. Its time to admit Covid is here to stay, lets continue to get people back to work, back in school, promote vaccinations, and live with the reality this is going to be an ongoing mutating infection that remains with us and stop vilifying the unvaccinated as the cause of spread when we know its spread by vaccinated people as well.
We can be honest that vaccines lesson the impact, and are a good help, but they don’t stop the spread.

Everybody is back to school and back to work, as far as I can tell. Also, unvaccinated do abet the spread, just as they do for influenza and measles. Agree that shaming doesn’t work, but pushing back against false information can work.

Schools are open. Businesses are doing great! Unemployment is at low 4.2%. Regular workers’ wages are up and there are so many jobs that workers are taking advantage of the situation to move to higher paying jobs. For the rich folks, stocks are at all time highs. S&P 500 is up 26.1% (I guess it did not crash when Biden became President). It is not all perfect – yes, inflation is worrisome. There are other Challenges and problems.
Trump is a major force in the Republican Party – just see what is happening in Georgia. Perdue (picked by Trump) is challenging Kemp the current Republican governor in the 2022 election because Kemp rejected Trump’s request to overturn His loss in Georgia.
Trump is a major danger to our democracy whether you are a Democrat or not. Democrats and a few Republican politicians are the only ones brave enough to shine the light on his garbage.
First, President Trump is not in office, and I checked just a minute ago to be curtain- Brandon, I mean Joe is currently sleeping in his chair in the White House. Interesting how you Democrats never talk about his disaster as a PINO. Trump still fills all that empty space in your head.
Secondly, most of you basement dwellers still living in fear over the Covid flu should stop getting their information from CNN. Do you read only what the government tells you to read? Ignorance is bliss. You are finding yourselves on the wrong side of history.
