As several large shopping centers have been targeted by looters en masse in the Bay Area in recent days, the Stoneridge Shopping Center was broken into early Monday morning but the group of would-be thieves fled within minutes empty-handed, according to Pleasanton police.

“The suspects did not gain access to any of the stores at the mall and there were no other reported incidents of looting in Pleasanton,” Sgt. Marty Billdt told the Weekly.

The situation unfolded at 1:19 a.m. Monday when nine unidentifiable people entered the Pleasanton mall by pushing an exterior sliding glass door off its track on the west side of the mall, near the “E” parking lot, according to Billdt.

Video surveillance footage showed the burglars run inside the mall toward the area of a jewelry store but leave immediately after observing the metal security gates in place, according to Billdt. The would-be thieves were seen on camera exiting the mall at 1:21 a.m. without any stolen merchandise.

“The only loss was the damage to the sliding glass door from being removed,” Billdt said. “At this time, we do not know if this incident is related to the other incidents in the Bay Area.”

Large-scale mass thefts have captured headlines in the Bay Area since the weekend, starting with a coordinated smash-and-grab robbery with multiple suspects at the Louis Vuitton store in San Francisco’s Union Square on Friday night and nearly 80 people storming the Nordstrom in downtown Walnut Creek on Saturday night — with video of both incidents making waves on social media.

A group reportedly broke into Sam’s Jewelers in Southland Mall in Hayward on Sunday evening while four people worked together to steal from Santana Row’s Lululemon store in San Jose that same night.

  1. It is not looting! it is robbery!

California penal section 463 covers looting. Under this law, looting occurs when a person commits a burglary or theft “during and within an affected county or ‘state of emergency’ or a local emergency’ or under an ‘evacuation order’ resulting from an earth quake, fire, flood, riot, or other natural or manmade disaster”,

  2. buklau, PleasantonParent AND keeknlinda- If you are so bent out of shape that looting and destruction took place in a few retail stores, then I assume you are aghast at the rioting, looting, destruction and attempt to overthrow/undermine our democracy on January 6, 2021 led by a known corrupt and unredeemable #45. The acceptance of lawlessness that #45 exemplifies and seemingly gets away with time after time has generated a belief that laws dont matter. You see Rittenhouse get away with no penalties for coming illegally armed to a protest just for the opportunity to hunt down humans in the street and yet you post as if it was your property taken. I agree that elections have consequences and America has seen the consequence of having elected a greedy, lying, misogynist over 4 years ago that paved the way for indifference and defiance of the laws and basic civility. Aim your criticism in the right direction.

  3. rett – really, you are going to blame a President that has been out of office for 10 months for the break in at a mall in Pleasanton, Ca? How about the terrible policies that have been put in place by the liberals that run our state and counties. I’m not sticking up for any person, I did like some of the policies of our former President but I also think he was a complete moron, but lets put the blame for this incident where it belongs. Using you line of thinking the guy that mowed down the people in the parade in Waukesha, Wi is a result of hate created by the former President. Guess no one is responsible for their own actions anymore. As far as Rittenhouse, you are spouting off on things that you have no clue about. He was not illegally armed! That charge was dismissed. And who in their right mind would attack a person that has a rifle strapped to their body?? We can debate his actions but don’t spread false information.
