Tri-Valley Haven is commemorating Juneteenth (which is Friday) with a special community display at its community building at 3663 Pacific Ave. in Livermore.

The nonprofit is inviting people to leave a sign or token describing what they celebrate about diversity and what they can do to help end racism. The community display, along with a banner honoring Juneteenth, will be available for all to see through the end of the month.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in America, the day federal Emancipation Proclamation orders were read in Texas on June 19, 1865.

  1. We have come a long way in eradicating the remnants of slavery in our actions and in our thoughts, however, the journey is not complete. I would strongly urge our leaders to declare June 19 as a mandatory National Holiday and also provide Slavery reparations to descendants of slaves. We need to make an earnest effort for a more fair, more equitable society.

  2. I would much rather see a national holiday declared in honor of Frederick Douglass or Booker T. Washington than “Juneteenth”. As for reparations…no problem as long as the British, the Dutch, and the East African Muslims all pitch in.
