Alameda County announced this week that its policies for waiving penalties, interests and costs on property tax payments for those affected by COVID-19 will align with the executive order recently issued by Governor Newsom.

The revised policy — which is effective starting in June and lasting through May 6, 2021 — extends the date and specific installments to be considered for a COVID-19 penalty waiver. The installments will include the first and second installment of property taxes for 2020-21 and, if approved, defer them until May 1, 2021.

Secondary residences and large businesses are not eligible for penalty relief beginning June 1. Alameda County officials said Treasurer-Tax Collector Henry Levy “hopes that the economic hardships experienced by Alameda County taxpayers will be short‐lived and will do what he can to help the financial situation of all those affected. ”

The policy, instructions and application form are available at https://treasurer.acgov.org. The office is still closed to the general public.

Applications may be submitted electronically; payment by check is recommended. Qualified waiver requests will not be processed until payment is received.
