Swalwell tells union workers he'll help them get through COVID-19 crisis

'You are worthy of our gratitude and should be taken care of and shouldn't be forgotten'

U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Livermore) told union healthcare, long-term care and education workers and other members on Wednesday that he will work with them to help them get the supplies and benefits they need to get through the new coronavirus pandemic.

At a video town hall, Swalwell said, "We're going to get through this, that's who we are. You, the health care workers, the janitors, the airport workers. You are worthy of our gratitude and should be taken care of and shouldn't be forgotten."

In response to a question from Nina Wells, the president of Service Employees International Union Local 121, which represents nurses in Southern California, Swalwell said Congress isn't doing enough at this time to provide mental health care services for health care workers who are feeling stressed about working during the COVID-19 crisis but he hopes it will do more soon.

Swalwell said Democrats in Congress are working on a new assistance package that would include mental health benefits for frontline workers.

"That's a priority and I promise we will seek it in the next package," Swalwell said.

In response to another question, Swalwell also said he will seek additional funding to support childcare workers.

Responding to a question by John Arantes of the BART chapter of SEIU 1021, which represents maintenance and clerical workers at the transit agency, Swalwell said he's working with BART's management to make sure that they get enough funding to survive while BART is experiencing a dramatic decrease in ridership.

Swalwell also said he's working to get funding so that all BART workers have personal protective equipment and to make sure that the agency has enough masks to give to riders who don't bring their own masks when they ride on the transit system.

Tom Ferreira, an emergency room technician at a hospital in Dublin, said he and other technicians are "feeling insecure and unsafe" because of a shortage of personal protective equipment.

Swalwell said the coronavirus relief package that Congress passed last month includes $100 billion for hospitals for wages and benefits as well as PPE.

Swalwell, this is what you need to do:

The government is issuing stimulus money to everyone. California governor is giving money to all illegal immigrants in California.

This war against this silent killer from China devastated America. What you need to do is write legislation that will provide government funding for funerals, of every American citizen that lost their life to this silent killer from China.

Those of us left standing will receive stimulus money, those that were killed by this silent killer from China should have funeral expenses paid by the government.

Short version: Swalwell tells union members that if they take care of him, he will take care of them since hospital workers are highly unionized and are forced to contribute to the Democrat party.

Notice that there is no mention of these hospital workers losing their jobs unlike employees working for small businesses. In the meantime, Democrats refuse to replenish the Paycheck Protection Program which is designed to keep small businesses afloat and employees on the payroll and not filing for unemployment. Speaker Pelosi showed her lack of concern for small businesses as she recently showed off her large selection of specialty ice cream in her $14,000 refrigerator in her Pacific Heights home.

First Serological study coming in from Stanford:

Web Link

The study was conducted in Santa Clara county, and suggests that the population Americans infected with the Wuhan Virus is 50 to 85 times larger than what's been suggested thus far by coronavirus tests.

If this is true, that means when comparing infection rate to deaths, the % of deaths falls off a cliff. Similar to, if not below, Flu.

To be clear, the paper says that the true number of infections in Santa Clara County may be 50-85-fold larger than the number of cases currently detected in Santa Clara County because relatively few people have been actually tested by the county. That doesn't mean that estimates of the coronavirus mortality rate by medical experts is off by a factor of 50 to 85. Unless the medical experts who calculate the mortality rate are completely incompetent, they would have taken into account the fact that not everyone with coronavirus has been actually tested for coronavirus.

I suspect that there are big error bars associated with current coronavirus mortality rate estimates, but we'll have to wait longer to see more studies to find out.

Yes, Alison Hayden is a long shot in the race against Swalwell. But so was Swalwell when he took on Pete Stark who had served in Congress for 40 years. And so was Trump when he ran against a former Secretary of State and United States Senator.

Does Swalwell deserve reelection? A good way to start the process is to think about the issues facing the 15th Congressional district. To many of us, grinding commute traffic, poor public transportation, the poor condition of public schools in Alameda County, the lack of affordable housing, an increasing homeless population, inadequate water resources, high costs for all forms of energy, and some of the highest local and state taxes in the nation are issues that should be at the top of the congressman’s priority list. Can anyone remember him talking about any of these issues? Ever?

Instead, Mr. Swalwell is known for being the first Presidential candidate to drop out of the 2020 race, as someone who is obsessed with removing President Trump from office before the November election, as someone who is focused on the country of Russia and not the citizens of his district and as someone who would “nuke” gun owners. In his frequent appearances on television, this is all he talks about.

Need some proof? Go to his congressional website Web Link and look at his list of twenty four “Issues”. Six of them have to do with Russia. And there is almost nothing describing the real issues we all face as residents of the 15th congressional district. In my opinion, we have been poorly
represented by this man.

This is why I am voting for Alison Hayden in November.

I see four, not six, issues with titles that explicitly mention Russia. But, regardless, I think that Russia is a valid subject of concern for a member of Congress. Russia's invasion and annexation of Crimea was the first naked power grab of territory in Europe since WWII and is deeply disturbing for the peace of Europe and the world. Russia also directed the infamous botched assassination attempt of Alexander Litvinenko in the UK, contaminating a UK neighborhood and resulting in the death of a British woman. Russia has also been involved in the brazen daylight assassination of Chechen in a Berlin public park. Russia was also caught red-handed trying to hack the headquarters of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons watchdog in The Hague. You can google up yourself some pictures of GRU (Russian military intelligence) operatives being arrested and handcuffed by Dutch intelligence officers.

Russia is out of control. Even during the Cold War, things like brazen daylight murders of people in public parks were considered out-of-bounds by both sides. Swalwell is right to be shining the spotlight on these Russian activities, and I support him 100% for his efforts on that.

There are six Russia related "Issues" on Swalwell's issues page, not four. One has to read each page to know that, not just look at the titles. Number 5 is called "Now What? It is all about Russia and Trump. It is redundant and sloppy but is listed as an issue on his page. Number 6 is titled "Protect Our Democracy" On that page, the subtitle is "Connecting the Trump-Russia Dots. Guess what that is about.

I would agree that Russia is not our friend. But neither is North Korea, Iran and China. Those countries rate almost no attention from Mr. Swalwell. Except that he supports the Obama deal with Iran and was opposed to the Suleimani killing. You would think he would have a problem with China's responsibility for the Chinese COVID-19 virus that is bringing the world to the beginning of a depression. No mention as an issue. No mention is his press releases.

Yes, Russia is out of control but China is far more dangerous. Thanks to the Clinton administration.

@Doug Miller wrote “ I would agree that Russia is not our friend. But neither is North Korea, Iran and China. Those countries rate almost no attention from Mr. Swalwell.”

That seems like a rather insincere and nit-picky criticism. You’re honestly trying to tell me that you would be fine with Swalwell if only he distributed his attacks more equally among North Korea, Iran, China, and Russia? My suspicion that you’re being insincere is further increased by the fact that the President that you support is hardly balanced in his criticism among the countries of North Korea, Iran, China, and Russia. We all know the one country among the four which he gives a pass to and shies away from criticizing, but yet you’re silent on that.

As for the Iran deal, not everyone agrees with you (and Trump) that it was a bad deal. It was part of a strategy to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons and giving them an alternative. Trump took that deal away and replaced it with......nothing. Trump is a man without a plan. Speaking of nuclear weapons, you should also note that a North Korea became a full-fledged nuclear weapons power under Trump’s watch. Not saying that previous Presidents were effective at stopping NK nuclear development, but neither was Trump. As for Suleimani, Trump again acted without foresight or a plan. The Iranian response of a missile attack against a US facility was predictable, but apparently not by Trump who should have had the foresight to move Patriot missile batteries into Iraq to protect US troops before killing Suleimani in order to prepare for an easily predictable counter-attack by Iran. Trump did nothing. Result: Dozens of Americans suffered brain damage in the Iranian missile attacks. No Patriot missiles to protect them. Trump supporters claimed that he’s a master 4D chess master, when in reality he can’t see even one move ahead in a game of checkers.

As for China and China’s responsibility for coronavirus, none of us knows to what extent China is responsible for the coronavirus outbreak. Yes, China was not honest and straightforward in reporting the outbreak, but nothing has been proven beyond that. Trump has his own motivations. He’s been desperately trying to find someone or something to pin blame on in order to cover up his own unpreparedness and ineptness in dealing with coronavirus. So far Trump has tried to blame China, Pelosi, Obama and previous administrations, “the Media”, state Governors, General Motors, and hospitals. Watch and see him make the list grow longer as he frantically tries to avoid accepting any responsibility.

Wombat,

Conclusion from the paper:

"Conclusions
The population prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in Santa Clara County implies that the infection is much more widespread than indicated by the number of confirmed cases. Population prevalence estimates can now be used to calibrate epidemic and mortality projections."

Exactly as I summarized. That you attribute this to "lack of testing" is non-sensical at best.

Bottom line 50-85x more people, in theory, have anti-bodies of the virus.

@DKHSK

Dan, this is what you wrote: “ If this is true, that means when comparing infection rate to deaths, the % of deaths falls off a cliff. Similar to, if not below, Flu.”

The paper you showed made no such claim. As you noted, it said “ Population prevalence estimates can now be used to calibrate epidemic and mortality projections.”. Yes, the information in the paper can be used to help improve mortality projections, but it doesn’t mean that the estimated mortality rate of coronavirus is going to “fall off a cliff” for a very simple reason: Unless the health and medical experts are totally incompetent, they already knew that there were many unconfirmed cases of coronavirus and they took that into account when calculating the estimated mortality rate. Admittedly, they probably didn’t have had a very good estimate of the number of unconfirmed cases and certainly this paper will allow them to improve their estimates of the mortality rate, but it’s not like they completely overlooked the fact that there were unconfirmed coronavirus cases - unless, again, you think that they’re all totally incompetent.

You seem to think that this paper means that we can take the previously estimated mortality rate and divide by 85 and get a revised coronavirus mortality rate which is comparable to the common flu, but that’s way too simplistic. Yes, it’s likely that the coronavirus mortality rate will be revised downward due to this and other such studies, but not by a factor of 50 or 85. The very fact that there are so many coronavirus deaths in this country and around the world argues against coronavirus having a mortality rate similar to the common flu.

No, I wouldn't be fine with Swalwell under any circumstances now. I actively supported him in 2012 when he ran against Pete Stark and needed Republicans. Then in a vile manner, he turned on Republicans and became a spokesman for Pelosi.

We can argue foreign policy forever. Both sides have made blunders over many years and nothing gets resolved. Ever. Which is why I am willing to let Trump take a different approach. But saying that Trump gave North Korea a nuclear weapons capability is a lie, fake news as Trump would say. As to the Iran deal, it was not designed to keep them from getting nuclear weapons, it was just designed to delay that eventuality until some other president could be blamed. Suleimani deserved to die, period. We are better off now, even with some casualties. I don't say that lightly, having served in combat for 20 months and know first hand about the loss of military personnel. As to Russia, Trump has been tougher on them than any president since Reagan. For example, Russia invaded Crimea and then shot down a civilian airliner during Obama's term. In response, Obama gave Ukraine blankets and MRE's. Trump has provided defensive weapons. There are many other comparisons that are favorable to Trump with regard to Russia.

But the reason I don't support Swalwell is that he does almost nothing for the 15th Congressional District. The local issues that I listed in an above post are of no interest to him. Instead, his interest is in removing Trump from office before the election. Almost everything he has said for the past three years is focused on that. Did I mention his "Issues" page?

The better choice this November is Alison Hayden to represent the 15th Congressional District.

The “fake news” chant has grown tiresome, especially when it has become obvious that when Trump cries “fake news” it really means that it’s simply news that he doesn’t like. This is from an administration that came up with claim that a lie is not a lie but is an “alternative fact” (Kellyanne Conway), an administration which claims that a lie is not a lie but a “slip of the tongue” (Sarah Sanders). This administration doesn’t have the right to point at others and cry out “fake!”.

As your latest claim of “fake news”, I didn’t write that “Trump gave NK a nuclear weapons capability”, you did. I wrote “ North Korea became a full-fledged nuclear weapons power under Trump’s watch.”, which is a factually TRUE statement. What is “fake” here is that you took my statement, twisted it into your own words, and then declared your own words “fake news”. That’s a maneuver worthy of Trump himself.

Big nothing burger in my book. My brother lives in New York and is going out of his mind with boredom and debt. He says Cuomo and Big Bird did a terrible job with this virus. First, they both encouraged everyone to go about their lives and live as New Yorkers and of all things celebrate Chinese New Years in Chinatown. Now after destroying the city Cuomo is crying for help from the Federal Government. Really poor leadership. In California my bet is that we are going to find that we have had this China flu for months and most of our residents have been exposed and all we have done and are doing by shutting everything down is destroying our economy. If we were self reflective and we are not, we should evaluate what is going on in Texas. My sister lives there and she says that they have the stay at home thing but no ones abides by it and they go about their lives. The Governor Abbott is doing a great job and announced yesterday that they are restarting the economy. They have about 29,000,000 people and only a few hundred deaths and she says most probably would have died anyway because of obesity and associated illness.

Pete, I'm not completely following your argument here:

Nancy Pelosi (just as one example) was acting similarly in SF, in a similar time frame. Very few in authority, to my knowledge, were acting much differently

Is your argument that NYC's hugely higher mortality count is solely/largely just attributable to "poorer leadership"? Alternatively, could it be a facet of higher population density and public transport usage, theaters, etc or am I missing something else in your comparative summary between SF/NYC and/or Ca/NY?

Some of the other states may simply not be close to peak yet.

Dan, did you not read and understand anything that I posted on this matter here?

OK, here’s a paper a quickly googled up which describes how scientists approached the problem that you are concerned about:

The Lancelet, Infectious Diseases, “ Estimates of the severity of coronavirus disease 2019: a model-based analysis”: Web Link

The technical term for the problem that you are so concerned about is called “under-ascertainment”, and as I suspected scientists are fully aware of the issue and did make corrections for it. They did have to make assumptions in applying an “under-ascertainment” correction and, as I stated previously, new papers such as the one you showed will help them make better corrections, but the bottom line is that they are already aware of the under-ascertainment issue and DID make corrections for it. I found and understood the section of their paper where they describe their methodology for making the under-ascertainment correction. I’ll leave it as an exercise to you to do the same.

Your claim that the new paper you showed will result in such a dramatic change in the coronavirus mortality rate that it will “fall off a cliff” to a level “Similar to, if not below, Flu” is bogus. Please leave the practice of science to scientists.

You said: "We all know the one country among the four which he gives a pass to and shies away from criticizing, but yet you’re silent on that."

Then I responded by posting a link that clearly contradicts you.

Trump is also responsible for being the first President to kill Russian soldiers contracted to Syria to fights its war: Web Link

WIPED THEM OUT!

So when you say he's giving Russia a pass, exactly how is he doing that after my responses, clown?

Dan

@DKHSK wrote “ Wombat, OMG you talk yourself in circles. You can't accept the underlying premise so you just link a paper that has nothing to do with the underlying research I posted.”

DKHSK, let me put it in the simplest, bluntest, terms because information has a tough time getting into your thick head: One of us is a professional scientist with a Ph.D. from Cornell and over 30 years of research experience, and has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications in well known scientific journals. The other person appears to have at best a knowledge of science equivalent to a not-very-bright middle school student and has no experience in processing scientific information and reading scientific papers, much less actually understanding the science in them. I’ll let you figure out which is which.

Trump didn’t do anything. He was out of the loop. The US forces had standard authorization to exercise self-defense in the event of an attack. If Mr. Bone Spurs had been there he would have been the only American running away from the Russians while screaming for mercy.

You’ve grown tiresome, Dan. I’ll let you go bother someone else.

Wombat,

There was another character on here who claimed he was exactly like you.

Why not register with Pleasanton weekly instead of having multiple screen names?

@Dr DKHSK PHD,

You have no idea what you are talking about. You have no training or experience in medicine, biology, or infectious disease. You have no business giving advice on what people should or shouldn't do regarding COVID-19. It would be best if you would just shut up and do what you are told.

So when something historic happens under Trump, he's not actually responsible. But when something is screwed up, its his fault.

Got it, Mr. "Scientist".

Hey

Didn’t I see Rep. Swalwell at the Dublin Farmers Market doing a book signing?

I think he is just biding his time here due social distancing.

He and Rep. Schiff are probably Zooming, planning their next fake impeachment of Trump, should Trump beat Biden in the polls this fall.

They probably conference in Speaker Pelosi, who is sitting in her fancy SF kitchen eating her gourmet ice cream, instead of passing bills to help the American people.

Another study, this time in Boston: Web Link

Safe link Boston Globe.

Of those randomly tested, 35% tested positive for COVID antibodies and didn't know they had contracted it.

BobB hardest hit.

@DKHSK,

Just do as you're told. Stay home except for essentials. Practice social distancing. Wear a mask when you need to go out. No social gathering.

When the experts say it is time to modify to allow for safe, slow, re-opening of certain activities, then and only then will it be okay. I report all violations I see and you are encouraged to do the same.
