Las Positas College’s Theater Arts is holding auditions this month for the high energy and Tony Award winning Disney’s Newsies: The Musical, which will launch their 2020-21 season in the outdoor theater later this summer.
Inspired by historic events, “Newsies” depicts the real-life newsboys’ strike of 1899, when newsboys in New York City spearheaded a two-week strike for fair wages against powerful newspaper publishers like Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. The youth-led campaign included orphans and runaways.
Aspiring performers hoping to join the show’s picket line must be 15 years or older, and should attend the dance call on Feb. 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. or 8:30 to 10 p.m. Bring tap shoes or jazz shoes, if necessary, and appropriate clothing to move in--auditors will be required to leap and turn for the “dance heavy” production. General auditions will be held Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Callbacks will be by invitation only on Feb. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. To sign up for a time slot, visit https://tinyurl.com/t2z44f6.
Those unable to attend either the dance call or general audition can submit a headshot, resume and taped audition by Feb. 18. Taped auditions must be no more than 30 seconds of a dance reel and 16-32 measures of a song. Monologues are also encouraged. Cast members will be required to sign up for THEA 57A/B/C/D, Rehearsal for a total of 3 units. Some scholarships are available for demonstrated need. Those cast as Newsies will be able to take six boot camp classes to prepare for rehearsals, provided at no cost to cast members by the LPC Theater Arts Department.
Auditions will take place at the Las Positas College Mertes Center for the Arts, 3000 Campus Hill Drive, in Green Room 4129.
