Editorial: Your friend, not enemy

Unprecedented attacks on the media hit the very protectors of our democracy

Could anyone have imagined the day would come when it was necessary to rally support for a free press in order to protect one of our most fundamental freedoms from attack by the President of the United States?

Yet that is the reality we, our fellow journalists and the nation face today from a President who has declared the press the "enemy of the people" and whipped up his supporters to physically and verbally threaten reporters going about their jobs.

The President is waging an open war on the press, broadly accusing it of making up stories and publishing "fake disgusting news." He repeatedly attempts to intimidate reporters, including inciting his own supporters to follow his example and taunt the press at his public events.

Today we join in an unprecedented coordinated expression of concern by newspapers across the country to focus public attention on the dangers of the President's attacks. Initiated little more than a week ago by the Boston Globe, hundreds of media organizations large and small are publishing editorials this week to describe in their own words why citizens should be alarmed by the President's relentless hostility to the news media, his attempts to turn citizens against it and the dangers to our democracy.

How vulnerable is press freedom? What does it take to undermine and destroy the credibility of institutions that are built upon trust and integrity and that citizens depend on to hold those in power accountable? Is our democracy sufficiently resilient to weather a President who shows no respect for the importance of a vigorous independent press?

Those are among the questions being asked today by defenders of democracy and all believers in a free society. From the nation's capital to small communities, every news organization is affected when its integrity is so sweepingly and indiscriminately challenged by a President with the power to reach and influence the entire country.

We are fortunate to live in a community that has a deep respect for the work our reporters and editors do and for the role journalists play in serving the public interest. That doesn't mean readers or elected officials agree with everything we write or every position we take in editorials, nor should it.

But professional journalists set out every day to gather the facts, evaluate the credibility of their sources and do everything possible with the resources they have to convey the full context and significance of the news. They are not guided by either their own political agendas or those of their employer. They are working for you.

Newspapers and other media organizations don't want to fight a war with the President of the United States. There will be no winners in such a battle; the ultimate result will be the undermining of two critically important institutions and the rise of extremism, or worse.

Those whose profession it is to report the news fairly and accurately need to be reminding their readers of how integral a free press is to the health of our democracy, including within the smallest of local communities, and how toxic it is when the President intentionally attempts to erode trust in the press.

Newspapers and professional journalism are facing threats on many fronts, including the President's recent imposition of tariffs on the Canadian newsprint used by most U.S. newspapers, which threatens to put many newspapers out of business. Virtually every newspaper is struggling to adapt to steady decreases in advertising revenue and many have closed down, leaving cities larger and smaller than ours with no reliable source of local news.

So what can you, our readers, do to support a free and independent press as envisioned by our founders?

First, think about and talk with others about what our community would be like without newspapers. Redirect those who may legitimately complain about errors or omissions in specific stories to the importance of having a news organization dedicated to informing the public and holding elected officials accountable and the consequences of losing that local institution.

Second, call people out when they invoke the President's language in criticizing local press coverage. "Fake news" is often real news that someone wishes hadn't been published. Stop using the term. Doing so only emboldens the President and furthers his false narrative.

Finally, subscribe to the newspapers you read and value. That financial support will determine the survival of most local news organizations and is the most tangible way to embrace the press freedoms that are under attack. We'd welcome your support, which you can give by clicking on the "Join" tab on our website, PleasantonWeekly.com.

What is community worth to you?
Support local journalism.

Our media isn't free, it is corporate. Just believe us, even though we have been wrong more often than right.

This isn't about small time publications like the PW, "fake news" is about top-down, party and intelligence community created memes and narratives that are pushed by the corporate media.

Whining about the free press while simultaneously running op eds calling for censorship of opinions they don't like.

News is a personal choice. Maybe you like Fox or MSNBC, or the Washington Post, or not. Like any corporate product, you pay for your choice and listen to and read what you want. You choose to believe or not. You choose to dig deeper or not. Most (I hope) are smart enough to put the information through a sniff test and to raise questions about any inconsistencies. For this particular administration, I’d like to see all reporters leave and take their microphones and computers with them. Cover the issues occurring around the world—there’s plenty to learn, not the least of which is how the rest of the world views us. This man is many things, but mostly he’s just exhausting.

"A good leader tries to embody the best qualities of his or her organization. A good leader sets the example for others to follow. A good leader always puts the welfare of others before himself or herself.

Your leadership, however, has shown little of these qualities. Through your actions, you have embarrassed us in the eyes of our children, humiliated us on the world stage and, worst of all, divided us as a nation."

It’s not news anymore. It’s opinions pieces and in many cases propaganda. The media has done it to themselves and it shows in the polls about media. The media is no longer objective but rather an extension of the far left and they hate this countey

It’s surreal that we are having to defend the concept of freedom of the press in this country, with the cry of “fake news” coming from a guy who time and time again has demonstrated that he has no qualms with just making up facts to suit himself.

Maybe Y'all who whine and complain about our press should try living in China, Russia or North Korea where there is NO free press: just what the 'state' delivers.

Oh boy would your opinions change. Then again, maybe not.....

Well, I did not vote for Trump.
However, I am please with the conservative control in Washington.
Three events need to happen to prevent Trump from reelection in 2020.

1. Pelosi needs to retire.
2. Chuck Schumer needs to retire.
3. The democratic party as a whole must shift from left to center.

Any thing short of all of the above will reelect Trump president in 2020.

There's certainly a lot to be proud of. The largest deficit in years, the largest tax break for the wealthiest 1% in history, the most corrupt administration since Jackson, policy decisions that ignore scientific facts in favor of an imaginary sky fairy, the total abandonment of our closest allies, the initiation of a trade war that is well on its way to destroying our economy, the largest wage gap in history, and a declining life span for the average american. Well done conservative control, lol. All aboard the federal Kansas bankruptcy express.

It seems the press has in so many words called the President an "enemy of the people", whipping up their readers/viewers to physically and verbally threaten his supporters, and the press often seems to be "waging an open war" on the President, inciting their viewers to taunt his supporters. I think editorials like this serve to deepen the divide, rather than trying to find common ground for people of differing political viewpoints. Your advice to "call people out" for their different viewpoint has a rather ominous meaning these days, given some of the stuff going on. Sorry - but I don't think your editorial is meant to be part of the solution. There's always an equal, and opposite, rxn (Newton's 3rd Law) - I think that holds pretty well for all the mudslinging going on these days.

Mitch described Fox and CNN accurately.

But what is undeniable is that our president is a pig without moral compass.

He may tow a line you prefer, administratively. But as a human, he is an embarrassment. And an anchor of shame that many will carry privately for a very long time. Rightfully so.

Friend not enemy? Okay friend, start by printing the truth! Give us some information! Right here in this town, how about by starting with this whole Costco thing. What is the truth? Why is the city going back to the starting line? The answer sure is not because Matt Sullivan wants them to! What's the truth?
And our school district? What the heck is going on there? Why isn't Neal built? Where did all the tens of millions that PUSD collected from Ruby Hill and the Vineyard Corridor go? Why do our schools look so shabby? Why are we buying computers and repairing roofs with Bond money? The Bond was supposed to get us ahead, not fix roofs and air conditioners! Roofs and air conditioners should be maintained out of the general fund. Where does all our money go?
If our local media could answer some of those questions, then the local people could hold those responsible accountable and perhaps make a difference at the ballot box!
Perhaps President Trump is a product of our country's recent journalistic standards?

The media completely ignores Antifa protest rallies where they chant about how they are going to put a bullet in the head of people they don't like, but then they get all hysterical about people chanting "CNN sucks" and they consider that a grave threat? And they wonder why people are against them.

Let's face it, MSM: when you liked about the wars Iraq, Libya, and Syria, millions of innocent people died, and tens of millions had their lives permanently ruined. As far as I know, when Trump says "fake news" no one yet has died. Maybe you should check your moral compass.

Nice puff piece, you're only 35-40 years late. I started to work for the Chronicle in the late 70's & even then there was a decided "filter" as to what the editorial staff would approve for final publication. There were probably hundreds of pieces that were shelved because it did not fit the model at that time in favor of the articles which ran that were almost diametrically in counter to the rejected ones. This continued well into the 80's during the Reagan administration when an outright liberal/left wing/socialist mantra became all too evident & I beat a hasty retreat.

So when you saw the practicality pre election anointing of Hillary as our next president it's no big surprise as to why we are experiencing this almost comical level of Trump Derangement Syndrome by the collective media (print, social, entertainment, etc) as they simply are incapable of believing how this happened. Russian "collusion", attempts to dredge up a hooker/porn star, accusations of racism/sexism/ageism, et. al. have no affect on this president because he doesn't play by the "usual" rules. Calling out the mainstream mass media for what they are & have been for almost half a century goes against the secret unwritten agreement & it has pissed them off to no end.

If you're looking for a true villain here, blame the DNC. They robbed Bernie of the nomination, propped up the absolute WORST candidate from their junk drawer and finally began to let their veil of compassion & sympathy slip when their usual suspect supporters form the African America, Hispanic & LGBT communities jumped ship to support Trump & were summarily ostracized and ridiculed for not towing the company line. While finally embracing their TRUE selves with a bonafied Marxist/Socialist in Occasio-Cortez only proves that they are no longer the Democrat party of JFK but the real embodiment of the extreme left wing. Trump 2020. #WalkAway

Thank you for the editorial. It was well said and professional. You did your job to get the discourse going. Unfortunately, some people don't understand that a rant is not a discourse. People, please remember that you shouldn't put anything in print that you wouldn't feel is OK to say to a person's face. The rants expressed here are embarrassing. Please be civil Pleasantonians. We are never going to be able to find common ground if we can't think for our selves, listen to differing view points and express ours with some intelligence. Hate speech just devalues your opinion. Even the people who ranted against the article are for free speech and freedom of the press. Let's defend the rights of all to express their views whether we agree with them or not. Point out the fallacies not rant with hate speech. Please act like adults.

The media and I use that term loosely forgets this is 2018 and not the 1970's and we have many places to confirm or deny stories. If there was a news agency which reported only the facts without giving their opinion it would reap a huge audience. When you don't even cover antifa and their violence, Maxine Waters, Keith Ellison, Cuomo, Van Jones, DiBlasio, Chicago murders, Rahm Emmanuel, the Clinton Crime foundation, Bill Clinton and his predatory behavior, but do cover our President non stop for things such as having two scoops of ice cream, having the audacity to agree to meet with North Korea, Russia, Iran then you lose credibility and are no longer a source of objective information and now to cry about being called "fake news" or "an enemy of the state" is just silly. You guys lit this fuse now you deserve to live with it.

Not so interesting actually. Go to locations like the CPD site and lists actual crime statistics in Chicago year to date and year against. Another great thing to do is go to you tube and actually listen to the above people speak. Get yourself a transcript of the Starr investigation, its free and public information.

Here's another one to consider. The media are complaining about their own personal safety and at the same time today the Washington Post, Times, AP, CNN, NBC, Politico, and BuzzFeed all filed a motion to unseal personal information about jurors home for the weekend in the Manifort case, including their names, ages, sex, and home addresses. Thank god the judge denied the motion. Can you imagine if someone released the same information about the media. They would be having a hissy fit. Hard to complain when you doing dangerous things to other people.

Doug,

The mainstream media just ignores it. They do not report it at all. Because the political values of Chicago are the same as the media's and high murder rates just doesn't fit their narrative. My only point is that the news should be just that and based on objective facts without giving opinions. Lay out the facts truthfully and let the viewers decide what their beliefs are. Ocasio banned the media from her town hall last night in Corona and it will not be reported....why? because she is a socialist and doesn't fit the narrative.

Less than 10 companies own every mainstream media outlet and those companies are in turn majority owned by less than .0001% of the US citizens and many can’t even claim that. Those people have a material interest in maintaining the status quo. Perhaps a better way of putting it would have been ALL biased media regardless of the bias is an enemy of the American Citizen.

Sorry, Pete. You guys need to read other news than Breitbart and Newsmax. Or at least listen to or read Trump’s own words of admission:

Donald Trump: ““Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower. This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics – and it went nowhere. I did not know about it!”

Gathering info on an opponent is not collusion it is info gathering. All sides do it. To many people simply read into what they want to see as facts. Truth is not always truth no matter what side you support. Bill Clinton famous statement to what does "is" mean.

As with almost any discussion on the PW website, after a few on topic comments, the discussion strays far from the topic and is then followed by personal insults. This issue needs to be addressed by the Pleasanton Weekly.

So, let’s get back to this editorial and its main points.

If the Pleasanton Weekly had shown any concern about President Obama’s attempts to hinder the press, then this editorial would have some credibility. It didn’t. The Weekly wants us to believe this all started with Trump. Is excluding such information “fake news”?

President Trump has made it clear that “fake news” is the issue for him not the press in general. While he will often point to a group of reporters and refer to them as “the fake news”, he almost always says that there are many good reporters out there. Is ignoring the exception he often makes an example of “fake news”?

The Weekly editorial expresses concern about the trust and integrity of government and how the press must be unimpeded in holding government accountable. But nowhere does the Weekly cite examples of false or misleading news stories published by the main stream media or challenge the press to do a better job. Instead, the Weekly writes that reporters “are not guided by either their own political agendas or those of their employer. They are working for you.” To me, this is a lie and a blatant example of “fake news”.

Has President Trump really eroded trust in the press or has he pointed to the obvious bias among reporters and major networks which has led to a distrust of the press? The loss of trust in the press and the general decline of your industry did not start with Trump. The conventional newspaper business has been failing for many years. At least the Weekly acknowledges this general decline but infers that the decline has something to do with Trump’s tariff on Canadian newsprint. Is this also an example of “fake news”?

Finally, if the Weekly, or any of the other newspapers who joined this effort, thinks that this will have the intended impact, I suspect it will be just the opposite. Seeing a newspaper editorial that is critical of the President is an every day occurrence. What is noteworthy is that this was the result of collusion in an industry that supposedly is free, independent and competitive.

Establishment Democrats are center-right. They're a bunch of business friendly neocon warhawks who take no issue with the NDAA and terrible AUMF bills while looking the other way as our drones kill children in countries most Americans can't even point out on a map. Why do you think they are so successful with coastal elites in the same way establishment Republicans are in non-liberal area elites?

While I would agree that the media often focuses on reporting news that is dramatic or incites emotion in order to gain readership/viewership, when Trump says "Fake News", it's clearly just news that paints him in a bad light. Perhaps some, even most news organizations focus on the unflattering side of Trump. However, I wouldn't consider that the fault of the news organizations. It's Trump's fault for waging a war on those news organizations. It's just the news organizations attempt to defend themselves from Trump's attack and his adversarial style of leading.

As for Trump supporters, I don't understand how they justify their Hypocrisy. For example, the pro-lifers who support him take the moral high ground on that issue, but completely ignore the fact that Trump is a cheating, lying, womanizing, immoral scoundrel that could "shoot someone" and people would still support him.

Rider,

I'd love for you to provide examples of the "7 lies per day" that Trump tells?

Here are 7 substantive Trump Tweets from the last 24hr's. I purposely left out campaign tweets:

1. "Bill DeBlasio, the high taxing Mayor of NYC, just stole my campaign slogan: PROMISES MADE PROMISES KEPT! That’s not at all nice. No imagination!"
2.) "I am sorry to have to reiterate that there are serious and unpleasant consequences to crossing the Border into the United States ILLEGALLY! If there were no serious consequences, our country would be overrun with people trying to get in, and our system could not handle it!"
3.) "Fake News, of which there is soooo much (this time the very tired New Yorker) falsely reported that I was going to take the extraordinary step of denying Intelligence Briefings to President Obama. Never discussed or thought of!"
4.) "Even James Clapper has admonished John Brennan for having gone totally off the rails. Maybe Clapper is being nice to me so he doesn’t lose his Security Clearance for lying to Congress!"
5.) "A Blue Wave means Crime and Open Borders. A Red Wave means Safety and Strength!"
6.) "Just watched former Intelligence Official Phillip Mudd become totally unglued and weird while debating wonderful @PARISDENNARD over Brennan’s Security Clearance. Dennard destroyed him but Mudd is in no mental condition to have such a Clearance. Should be REVOKED? "
7.) "It is outrageous that Poisonous Synthetic Heroin Fentanyl comes pouring into the U.S. Postal System from China. We can, and must, END THIS NOW! The Senate should pass the STOP ACT – and firmly STOP this poison from killing our children and destroying our country. No more delay!"

Ok...now which of these 7 are lies and why?

Anyone other Trump hater want to take a crack at this?

How about the editorial writer? Trump specifically points out the New Yorker for fake news. Was it?

From the New Yorker article re/ stripping Obamas clearance: Web Link

"As Trump stepped up his public and private attacks on Obama, some of the new President’s advisers thought that he should take the extraordinary step of denying Obama himself access to intelligence briefings that were made available to all of his living predecessors. Trump was told about the importance of keeping former Presidents, who frequently met with foreign leaders, informed. In the end, Trump decided not to exclude Obama, at the urging of McMaster."

So Trump never mentioned taking away Obamas security clearance (I believe he should), it was a mythical "some", according to the article.

Trump flat out denies he even spoke about the topic.

The above article is the very definition of FAKE NEWS, yet somehow it is Trumps fault how?

This is why the PW and other media sources stance on the presidents attack on fake news organizations is disingenuous and outright false.

The PW and greater media deserve all the ridicule you get.

Start reporting the facts and we'll support you.

I'm not a news organization and don't have the time to go over every single Trump tweet to see if they contain misleading statements, but if you expect me to pick out 7 mistruths from 7 cherry picked tweets, maybe you have time to come up with 7 conspiracy theories why Trump has nothing to do with the latest CNN headline "COHEN PLEADS GUILTY AND IMPLICATES TRUMP"

Anyway, I rely upon trusted news organizations to vet my news. CNN analyzed Trumps statements to come up with the 7.6 mistruths per day. It's believable because almost everything I hear him say is deceitful at best. He is a master manipulator and has his supporters eating out of the palms of his hands. Web Link

What proof do we have that Trump is an American citizen? I haven't seen a birth certificate. This is a serious issue. Why won't the mainstream media report on it?

Rider,

Here is the specific plea re/campaign finance in the Cohen case:

"Count Eight of the Information charges the defendant with making an excessive campaign
contribution, on or about October 27, 2016, in violation of 52 U.S.C. 30116(a)(1)(A),
30116(a)(7) 3r. 30109(d)(l)(A), and 18 U.S.C. Count Eight carries a maximum term of
imprisonment of 5 years; a maximum term of supervised release of 3 years; a maximum ?ne of
$250,000, twice the gross pecuniary gain derived from the offense, or twice the gross pecuniary
loss to persons other than the defendant resulting from the offense, and a $100 mandatory special
assessment."

Perhaps you would be good enough to point out Trump's name in ANY of the text I pasted above?

We knew all about this stuff months ago and Trump did nothing illegal, Cohen did.

Oops.

In about three days, this too shall pass.

Dan

That's not the plea, that's the charge. I do trust that CNN has someone knowledgeable with our legal system and knows the difference between a plea and a charge.

You're correct, my mistake. However, my point still stands.

Now, since the Obama campaign paid out the largest fine for campaign violations to date, $375,000. I'm sure you'll be so kind as to look over a Trump associate, not actually Trump himself, having to do the same thing: Web Link

:)

Or are you a hypocrite like every other democrat?

That's a really obscure story. I have to admit that I never heard about it before perhaps because this was a campaign disclosure violation committed by the campaign committee, not Obama himself. In the Cohen case, it is now proven beyond a shadow of doubt that he knew about it and personally directed it.

However, that's not the reason why I dislike Trump so much. The Cohen scandal is just the latest headline. The main reason why I dislike Trump so much is he's nothing more than a school yard bully who devolves political discourse to name calling and getting his followers to think emotionally rather than rationally. His bully tactics create hate and division and weakens the US nationally and internationally. When a president should be the voice of reason, he is instead the voice of discord. His economic policy create short term gain at the expense of a ballooning deficit that future generations will pay for. His environmental policies put the future climate at risk. His focus on vilifying undocumented immigrants and building a wall does absolutely nothing to address the underlying cause nor find a real solution to our broken immigration system. He drained the swamp and back-filled it with oil sludge, criminals and Russian puppets. He is wrong in so many ways that it's hard to believe anyone could support him and believe that he cares about anyone but himself.

Ah...the typical ‘Obama didn’t know’ defense. It was HIS campaign. Perhaps he found out about it in the newspapers? Lol.

Funny thing that you brought up Russia in context of this thread. You know that neither Manafort, nor Cohen were guilty of anything related to alleged Russian interference in our election, right?

2 days and this will all blow over, as usual and totally predictable.

I think it is you, Bob, that should take him seriously.

There’s a reason why most of the FBI executive staff under Obama have either been fired or resigned. The DoJ is next, then the political class.

By the time Trump is done with his two terms, you’ll be thanking him for cleaning out the mess created by our past and current political class.

This isn’t about political party anymore, both need to be wiped out, especially the far left. It’s happening as we speak, but “Russia”!

And lest you think I’m being sarcastic, I’m not.

My Trump cheerleaders have short memories. Certainly of the 16 counts only 2 really matter. And only that Trump lied repeatedly to the public. His base won't care (head in sand) Congressional GOP leadership are afraid to do/say anything. Beyond the press losing their heads, nothing will happen...And Dems will cry and moan, stump their feet. And again, nothing will happen until, perhaps, after November; maybe.

And if the Never Trumpers think the FEC will do anything, puuuuulllllleeaasseee.

So glad I don't belong to either party and just laugh at y'all losing your heads over ever little thing that happens. Go outside, get some air.

PS and btw although Trump's name was not in Cohen's counts, he all but WAS. It's the details that trip trolls up.

The FEC won’t do anything because Trump didn’t break the law and no amount of shrieking will make it so.

I know that’s hard to accept, but do try.

Ps, try researching what the former chair of the FEC has to say on the issue. Illuminating. Don’t take my word for it.

I personally take Trump and his supporters very seriously. History has taught me that when you have a madman in power and enough people supporting him, very bad things can happen. Just look at Hitler.

Others called Hitler:

R Regan = Hitler
GHW Bush = Hitler
GW Bush = Hitler
J McCain = Hitler
M Romney = Hitler
D Trump = Hitler

When everyone is Hitler, no one is Hitler.

Nobody of any serious intellect either listens or believes what the left says anymore.

Did I call Trump Hitler? No, I said madman. However, even an amateur student of history can see similarity in the rise to power of someone like Hitler and Trump. For example, Hitler was able to gain power in part by promising Germans that he would make Germany great again. Sound familiar?

Yes, and Hilter blamed Romas and Jews just like Trump blames Mexicans and Muslims for social problems. The Trump administration is one big endless parade of human debris. Now he threatens us with economic collaspse if there are impeachment attempts. Sure, Hillary was the crooked one so says Trump.

You used Trump, madman and hitler in the same paragraph. Don't come back now and shriek that you didn't attempt to link the three, I know exactly what you mean.

As far as Trump blaming "mexicans" he's done nothing of the sort, he's blaming illegal immigrants and he's only partially right. The blame really goes towards past and present lawmakers who cannot or will not fund building a wall (which they voted in favor for many years ago), and creating more sensible laws along with current strict enforcement of VISA stay overs.

I guess you still believe it was Trump putting children in cages too, eh?

North Korea just returned remains of fallen soldiers. No diplomacy there, eh?

We FINALLY deported a NAZI back to Germany. No diplomacy there, huh?

These are just 2 diplomatic successes of the last month. Shall I go on?

Here's an idea: why not tell us where he is failing and then we can discuss?

Your blanket accusations are so tiresome and not at all interesting.

DHKSK, If Trump is only blaming illegal immigrants, then why does he constantly single out Mexicans and never bring up Chinese workers who have (illegally) over-stayed vistas or run illegal private schools with fraudalent accreditation in order to get temporary student vistas. Two such operations have been busted here in town. Mexicans are more a part of the California culture than any other “immigrant” group.

Wilma,

No other group takes more out of the system then illegal immigrants from south of the border.

And lets be very clear, Trump has always maintained that the VISA system is broken and that many other groups take advantage of the situation.

Fixing everything takes time. He could accomplish more if he wasn't constantly dogged by fake news and phony Russia investigations.

Ahem!...PW.

"Fixing everything takes time. He could accomplish more if he wasn't constantly dogged by fake news and phony Russia investigations"

Trump is wholly and completely responsible for the mess he is in. "fake news", it's just news that paints Trump in an unflattering light. If Trump wasn't suck a big jackass, kept his mouth shut, stopped personally attacking the news organization and pretty much every institution and everyone who disagrees with him and started acting like a decent, respectable person, the news organizations would stop publishing so many unflattering stories about him.

As for the Russia investigation, he publicly asked for Russia's help to defeat his political opponent! Frankly, I'm surprised he wasn't charged with treason for that statement, but I guess publicly asking a foreign government for help to defeat a political opponent doesn't constitute treason unless the foreign government actually follows through with the request. I guess Russia decided they would rather see what damage Trump could do to the US as president than put him in jail. So far, it looks like Russia make the right call. The US and it's allies are more divided than they have been in decades.

"Trump is wholly and completely responsible for the mess he is in."

What mess? We're two days from the latest "scandal" and yet, Trump is still Trump and the press is starting to move on, just like I predicted.

""fake news", it's just news that paints Trump in an unflattering light."

Yep, unflattering, but you left out UNTRUE. If half of what was reported was true, even the squishy RINOS would have jumped on the impeachment train. And instead of lamenting his labeling fake news, why not give us the list of news stories that were true and let us discuss?

I know you won't.

"If Trump wasn't suck a big jackass, kept his mouth shut...and started acting like a decent, respectable person, the news organizations would stop publishing so many unflattering stories about him."

So you're telling me that the press won't attack him if he behaved...yet I guess you forget how that same press vilified Regan, both Bushes, all republican candidates over the last 40 years and Sarah Palin. And all except Sarah Palin never fought back.

I'm just old enough to remember it all. Its a lie that being nice to the press gets you favorable coverage. A flat out lie.

I love Trump because he fights back. You hate Trump because he fights back and you're not used to getting metaphorically punched.

Get used to it.

"...he publicly asked for Russia's help to defeat his political opponent! "

Care to discuss what we found in the emails that were leaked through wikileaks, or do you just want to cry over that illegal and unethical activities of the DNC and members of Hilarys campaign team that were uncovered and exposed for all to see?

And besides, even Sen Mark Warner, a vocal critic of Trump is now reversing all his BS on Russia, he now says no evidence of collusion. Wonder why?

Got any more? I can go all day.

So if the fake news is fake, why doesn't he sue? The reason is it's real news. He's just mad that there are so many news organizations that focus on the bad things like his temper tantrums, intimidation tactics, criminal activity and his dictatorial leaning. Of course, I'm sure you would prefer Trump could do away with all those pesky checks and balances things our constitution guarantees and just get on with being a dictator, right?

"temper tantrums, intimidation tactics, criminal activity and his dictatorial leaning."

"...dictitorial leaning".

LOL! Drama much?

Why doesn't he sue? Because he doesn't have to, the press has singularly done the job of virtually guaranteeing that he will be re-elected.

For example, go back and look at just last weeks revelations regarding Cohen.

For over 1 1/2 years we've been hearing from the left and the press about Russian conspiracies and dossiers. CNN over time had linked Cohen to the Dossier and what happened last week? Cohen spokesman, Lanny Davis (the CLINTON'S Lanny Davis) came out and proclaimed that the dossier with regards to Cohen was fake.

Did you even catch that in the news cycle? Do you comprehend what that did to the narrative of "Russia".

Trump is innocent of anything related to Russia and of this phony election contribution charge Cohen copted to. It will come out soon enough and when it does, the media (and that includes this publication), will have to move on to other lies. In addition, when he is cleared, it will have made Trump more powerful than any other sitting President. Nobody, not the squishy republicans or communist democrats and the media, will be able to touch him.

It will all be coming down...soon.

Trying to understand the narrative of Trump cheerleaders here. If Trump lies, does something illegal and it doesn't relate to Russia, it is a nit? If Mueller or SDNY finds something illegal and again it has nothing to do with Russia it is again a nit? Is that about right? Is that reasonable, logical?

Being diplomatic Trump is an embarrassment. A serial liar any 12yr old could prove. He's also a coward. Can't fire Sessions, can't confront him in person because well known Trump can't do personal confrontation. However, he can via twitter as that is a very safe place for him. Man up, grow some, and then fire his AG. And if congress does nothing (they are afraid) then everybody go back to your corners and vote in 2020.

And still Mueller is coming. Yeah, just a report with maybe some charges for minions. But he will come. And nobody here knows what he has.........yet...

There is one thing we agree on. With a few exceptions, such as Senator John McCain, who is a great man and a great patriot that I would have voted for over Hillary in a heartbeat, the GOP in congress are a bunch of pansies. The need to grow some balls and kick Trump out of their party rat
