With the federal tax reform legislation of late last year placing new restrictions on the charitable donation deduction, a coalition of local nonprofits is hosting a forum to help charity organizations in the Tri-Valley prepare for what to expect this year and beyond.

Organized by the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance, “Thriving in the New Philanthropy Era” is set to run from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore, featuring keynote presentations from Bay Area philanthropy specialists.

“We are delighted to feature three extremely compelling and widely respected speakers to explore an issue of vital importance to nonprofits,” said Chris Carter, board member and event chair for the alliance. “Our goal with the forum is to give nonprofits actionable ideas to help them find their footing in the new philanthropy paradigm.”

Alliance officials said charitable giving is on the rise overall in the U.S. but donors are increasingly sending funds overseas and authorizing third parties to make gifting decisions on their behalf. “To sustain their base of support and meet the increasing needs of the communities they serve, local nonprofits need to recalibrate their fundraising strategies,” they added.

That’s where Thursday’s forum comes in, to provide local nonprofit managers the chance to hear about strategy options directly from experts in the field.

Leading off will be Kate Wilkinson’s presentation, “Introduction to ‘The Giving Code.'”

Wilkinson directs strategy and project leadership for Open Impact, a strategic advisory firm that partners with nonprofit and philanthropic leaders to create positive social change. She was a key contributor to “The Giving Code,” an Open Impact study that explored the role of the social sector in addressing the needs of less-fortunate people.

Another presenter will be Randy Pond, CFO at Pensando Systems who has also served on the boards of directors for more than a dozen nonprofit and fundraising groups, including Stanford Health Care-ValleyCare. Pond will speak on “Corporate Philanthropy in our Communities.”

The third speaker will be Jan Masaoka, CEO of the California Association of Nonprofits, a statewide alliance of more than 10,000 nonprofits. She has also written three books on nonprofits, is a prior Nonprofit Executive of the Year recipient and member of the National Public Policy Committee of the Independent Sector. Masaoka’s presentation will be on “Public Policy and the Tax Code.”

Wilkinson will return at the end to close out the forum with a speech on “Let’s Talk Solutions,” which will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.

Tickets remain available for the forum at $15 for alliance members and $30 for non-members. Visit TVNPA.org for more info or to register. The forum is sponsored by Sapience Nonprofit Solutions.
