Pleasanton Mayor Jerry Thorne launched his campaign for re-election to a fourth and final term as mayor at a sold-out fundraising breakfast last week at the Alameda County Fairgrounds’ Palm Pavilion.

Voters won’t see Thorne’s name on the municipal ballot until Nov. 6, some nine months from now. Still, he’s taking no chances on gaining support early in what promises to be a donnybrook of national, state and other Tri-Valley municipal elections this year, starting with the California primary on June 5.

Thorne was first elected to the City Council in a special election June 7, 2005, and then re-elected by wide margins in November 2006 and again in 2010. In 2012, he was elected mayor, a position that in Pleasanton is limited to a total of eight years with the mayor facing voters for re-election every two years. Re-elected in 2014 and again two years ago, Thorne would be termed out in 2020.

Thorne kicked off his campaign in a room filled with supporters, reviewing his achievements and spelling out his agenda for his last two years as mayor.

Thorne said he has put his 40 years of business experience to work as mayor to bring fiscal sustainability and pension reform to Pleasanton.

“I’ve been and will continue to be your mayor all day, every day,” he said. “I have no other job priorities that will get in the way of being your full-time mayor.”

He cited as major achievements the ongoing financial success of Pleasanton, which closed the last fiscal year with a surplus of more than $6.5 million, spending less than budgeted and gaining $115.7 million in revenue overall, primarily from higher property and sales tax receipts. He said that was the result of “vision, discipline and planning.”

During his current term in office, the city’s unemployment rate dropped to “an exceptionally low 2%,” with commercial and industrial vacancies at 6% and 2%, respectively.

“The good news is that we’re almost ‘full up at the inn,’ so to speak, in commercial space,” Thorne said. “But the bad news is that we have limited places for new companies or those that may be looking to expand.”

So, in his final two years, Thorne plans to focus on finding ways to expand Pleasanton’s vibrant and growing life sciences sector by bringing together the leaders of medical, biotechnology and device firms now here. Together, they will “make sure we are meeting their needs and to grow this vitally important industry cluster.”

Other issues he plans to address include:

* Stem the intrusion into local planning by state lawmakers who seek to allow more high-density housing on vacant properties, including on Pleasanton’s largely empty 400-acre east side.

* Complete the planning process for a new civic center and library.

* Build the final leg of a four-lane Highway 84 between I-580 and I-680.

* Finish $350,000 in upgrades to Pioneer Cemetery.

* Continue the progress being made to extend BART to Isabel Avenue and an ACE Train connection to relieve traffic congestion on I-580.

* Finding new and better ways for the city’s government to help support Pleasanton schools.

* Address concerns over the lack of diversity in local government to ensure everyone is represented in the decision-making process.

“I am proud of this city,” Thorne said in concluding his campaign launch remarks. “I believe that we are headed in the right direction and that we will remain a city of planned progress deserving of the high rankings that we have achieved in national polls. With your help and support, I plan to keep it that way.”

  1. It may be an unpopular opinion in this town but high density housing is not something that should be opposed just for the sake of preserving that “small town” feeling many Pleasantonians crave. Let’s face it, this is a city with over 80,000 residents that has very little separating it from neighboring cities of 60,000 (Dublin) & 90,000 (Livermore) residents. That’s almost a quarter million people living in the Tri-Valley. There’s just not enough space to have parks, schools, businesses, single-family homes, and still be able to house all these people. The median home price in this town is over a million dollars. High density housing is not just for the “riff raff” from Oakland, it’s also for young and lower/middle class people who have lived here and do work here to continue doing so. Scarcity of housing impacts those who already own homes as well, as people are forced to commute into and through town from further away, increasing traffic for all. High density housing is not a problem or a threat, it is a necessity and a solution.

  2. It may not be a problem or a threat but do they have to fill every bit of vacant dirt with high density housing.
    I wonder where the kids living there will go to school cause the schools are maxed out now. And what about water…remember we all have to conserve so there is enough for everyone. If you don’t have enough schools or water for what is here now why in the world add more

  3. @ Marco. WHAT??? So forget about our overcrowded schools, don’t build any more parks or single family homes, and no more new businesses just keep building stack and pack housing because obviously we haven’t reached maximum “cluster” yet. Sounds like a campaign platform to run against Thorne for Mayor! Might as well complete the burial plans of this town.

  4. The number one problem for this city is schools!
    The PUSD is not responding to the obvious demand on the horizon.
    We need more new schools!!!
