Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre, headquartered in Pleasanton, performs its three big musicals each season at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore. But Saturday, it begins a special presentation of a three-week run of “Forever Plaid” at the Douglas Morrisson Theatre in Hayward, a show it also performed at the small Village Theatre in Danville a few years ago.

“Forever Plaid,” described as a “deliciously goofy revue,” centers on four young male singers (Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie) in the 1950s who get together to become their idols — The Four Freshman, The Hi-Lo’s and The Crew Cuts. They practice in the basement of Smudge’s family’s plumbing supply company and become “Forever Plaid.”

The singing foursome lands a gig but on the way they are broadsided by a school bus and killed instantly — but they are miraculously revived for a posthumous chance to perform the show that never was.

The guys squabble over the smallest intonations in their singing and execute outlandish choreography with precision. They perform great nostalgic hits — including “Three Coins in the Fountain,” “No, Not Much,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Chain Gang” and “Love is a Many Splendored Thing” — and keep up an entertaining patter.

Producer of the show is Kathleen Breedveld; director/choreographer, Todd Aragon; and musical director, Cary Litchford.

The cast features Jordan Smith as Sparky; Matthew Kelly as Smudge; Jesse Garcia and Glen Riggs (May 13-14) as Jinx; and Ron Houk as Frankie.

Tickets are $25-$29. Visit www.trivalleyrep.org, or call (510) 881-6777. Douglas Morrisson Theatre is located at 22311 N. Third St., Hayward.
