The Pleasanton RADD (Recreational Activities for the Developmentally Disabled) basketball teams took home a pair of medals in the Special Olympics Northern California regional competition held in Pleasanton earlier this month.
The event featured more than 40 teams, each bracketed into divisions based on skill levels and playing a total of three games, according to RADD coach Kay King. The competition was hosted at Amador Valley High School and Harvest Park Middle School on March 4 and 5.
The RADD A team earned the silver medal, narrowly missing out on the gold after dropping its final game by only two points, King said. The team consisted of Steven Adkins, Jennifer Thomas, Mason Trevisano, Bruce Louwert, Jason Paasch, Evan Rutter, Peter Voss, Raymond Reta, Ryan Butterly and Greg Neves, with coaches Sergio Castilla, Kathy D'Onofrio and Jim Spillane.
The RADD B team also finished strongly, earning a bronze medal. The team included Jamie Gadbaugh, Victor Almeida, Camellia Pinhero, Dawn Nickles, Michael Ahre and Lauren Lenigan, with D'Onofrio and Troy Nickels coaching.
In other action, local RADD athletes Adam Pinney of Pleasanton and Lisa Burley of Castro Valley won gold medals in the individual skills event, which consisted of three drills: target passing, timed 10-meter dribble and spot shot.
