Tri-Valley students took home multiple awards from the 26th annual Contra Costa County Model United Nations Conference, held at Diablo Valley College last weekend.
Pleasanton’s Foothill High School earned the Best Delegation award and Dougherty Valley High in San Ramon was presented with the Outstanding Delegation award, according to the Contra Costa County Office of Education, which directed the conference. All told, 225 Bay Area high school students representing 13 schools took part in the two-day event.
“We are pleased to see so many high school students throughout our county and the Bay Area take advantage of our Model UN program,” Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Karen Sakata said in a statement. “The skills they are currently refining with this program will be the same ones they’ll use in college and/or their future careers.”
Participating students served as delegates each representing a nation and negotiated on that country’s behalf. Delegates debated international issues in 10 committees, discussing topics including eradicating child labor, reducing global food waste and the political participation of women. The event concluded Saturday afternoon with an awards ceremony recognizing the delegates.
Model UN participants were lauded for outstanding committee work, and individual delegates received awards in recognition of their debate and leadership skills, knowledge of the issues and presentation of key resolutions.
Foothill’s team, which consisted of 51 participants, earned 31 individual honors. Students from other Tri-Valley schools were also recognized with individual awards: Dougherty Valley, California High in San Ramon and The Athenian School in Danville.
The academic event improves high school students’ understanding of the United Nations and its role in global issues and gives them the opportunity to learn about other cultures, according to the Office of Education. It was coordinated by Kevin Felix Chan of Best Delegate along with members of the University of California at Davis Model United Nations Club.
