Hearst Elementary School's Fall Festival has been canceled this year after the school was unable to find enough volunteers to run the event, school officials announced Friday afternoon.
The free festival was scheduled for next Friday at the school, and dinner, a cake-decorating contest and carnival games were planned. The event would have held at the same time as Friday night's football game between crosstown rivals Foothill and Amador Valley high schools.
"The decision to cancel was not made lightly," Hearst principal Elias Muniz said in an email to parents. "It takes many helping hands to successfully run a school event. Thank you to those that had already signed up to volunteer. Unfortunately, we still fell short of the numbers needed to fully staff the Fall Festival."
He said the festival, which happens regularly at the school, requires more than 100 volunteers.
He said the school is planning to have a fall festival next year, and plans are in the works for a spring festival in 2016.
