San Mateo Bridge reopens in time for today's morning commuter traffic

Bridge closed over weekend for resurfacing, structural repairs

The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge reopened to traffic shortly after 4 a.m. this morning after being closed for the weekend for resurfacing and structural work.

The bridge will be closed again over the Memorial Day weekend May 22-25.

Caltrans, the state transportation agency handling the maintenance project, said the bridge closures are allowing crews to resurface and treat the deck structure, resurface the pavement and perform routine maintenance.

Victor Gauthier, Public Information Officer for Caltrans District 4, said the work will help prolong the service life of the bridge.
