Pleasanton Middle School cheerleaders bring home national title

'They rocked it' -- Cheer coach Jennifer Gatan

The Pleasanton Middle School cheer team won another championship title in competition at the United Spirit Association (USA) Jr. Nationals in Anaheim.

"I remember telling them on the warm-up mats, 'This is your day. Don't let anyone take that away from you,' and they rocked it," said Pleasanton Middle cheer coach Jennifer Gatan.

The team competed against 11 other teams in the novice small/medium division -- including 2014 defending champion Hart Middle School, which placed 10th this year.

"We had a fall on a stunt and our ending pyramid just crumbled," said Hart cheer coach Kelly Redgrave. "It wasn't our day."

Redgrave added, "We are so happy that our fellow Pleasanton school took home the championship and the title remains in Pleasanton."

The two cheer teams have been preparing since last year for nationals, which included competing at various USA regional competitions for nationals qualification. Both teams competed well at regionals, with Hart consistently placing first.

Harvest Park Middle School returned from Anaheim last month after placing first in the "Large Junior High" division at the cheerleading nationals for the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA).

Amador Valley and Foothill high school cheer teams will also be traveling to Anaheim on March 20-22 to compete at the USA High School Spirit Nationals. Both junior varsity cheer teams will be competing against each other, while Amador Valley and Foothill varsity teams compete in different divisions.
