Local lawmen will be out tonight serving meals at Strizzi’s Restaurant downtown and asking for tips. It’s not because the department is short on funds — it’s to raise money for local Special Olympics athletes.

Police officers will be waiting tables and taking drink orders from 6-9 p.m. for tips to help fund free year-round sports training and competition opportunities in 11 different sports.

“We hold four to five per year at four to five restaurants. Each of these restaurant chains hold tip a cop events at the majority or all of their locations the same night,” said Sergeant Pat Walsh of the Pleasanton Police Department. “Last month we held an event at Red Robin and our location collected $3,100 and the total for all restaurants was over $65,000 in one day.”

In case you’re not in town, officers will also be at two other Strizzi’s Restaurants, at 2205 First St. Livermore, and 2740 Mowry Ave. Fremont.
