Woman killed Sunday in fiery crash on Altamont Pass

Car drives off eastbound I-580 lane, plunges several hundred feet down hillside

A woman was killed in a fiery crash Sunday morning after her vehicle plunged several hundred feet from I-580 near the Altamont Pass.

Witnesses reported the crash at 8:52 a.m. when a brown SUV was seen driving off the right shoulder of eastbound I-580 near the top of the pass, California Highway Patrol officer Kevin Bartlett said.

The SUV overturned multiple times as it fell and burst into flames at the bottom of a steep ravine adjacent to the roadway, Dublin police Office Steve Creel said.

The female driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was killed, Creel said. The victim's body was badly burned and she has not been

identified.

No other vehicles appear to have been involved, Creel said.

The far right lane of Highway 580 was shut down to accommodate emergency vehicles but traffic has not been impacted, Bartlett said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
