Pleasanton men, teen arrested for alleged felony assault of a disabled man

Two men allegedly shot 19-year-old man with a BB-type gun

Two men and a 16-year-old girl from Pleasanton have been arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, torture and false imprisonment of a 19-year-old learning disabled man, police said yesterday.

The assault reportedly occurred in the evening of Feb. 18 when the victim entered a local business around 7:40 p.m., bleeding from the hand. Police said the man said he had been shot then ran out of the store, got into a car and left the area. A witness was said to have retrieved the license plate number of the car and the victim was later located and found to have been shot 20 to 25 times with a BB-type gun.

Sgt. Jim Knox of the Pleasanton Police Department said the victim knew the suspects and considered them friends. They reportedly met up with him at a fast food restaurant before taking him to be assaulted.

"The victim stated that this had occurred several times prior to this incident but it was never reported," Knox said.

Investigators were able to identify the suspects as Jonathan Fala and Sergio Ramirez, both 19. The 16-year-old girl was not identified. Fala was arrested Feb. 28 and the other two were arrested Tuesday.

Police said the three suspects allegedly drove the victim to a remote location off of Foothill Road, told him to stand near a tree and the male suspects shot the victim. BB pellets were found lodged in the victim's hand and leg, and also had injuries to his neck, back and head. The victim was treated at ValleyCare Medical Center, which included stapling several wounds and removing the pellets.

As well as one about a Pleasanton molestation case in the CC Times:

An eye for an eye...maybe the torturers should get their own 20-25. Hey, let's have a raffle, to:
1. Earn $$ for PUSD, and
2. Let a Pleasanton resident dole out some justice on these sick puppies. I bet we'd find some folks willing to fork up a few dollars for a chance to nail these half-brain sickos.

Pleasanton Weekly staff: Can you please investigate and report on the molestation case mentioned in the CC Times?

The Pleasanton Weekly reported a story back in June 2009 wherein a Jonathon Fala of Pleasanton was arrested in connection with some burglaries that occurred in an apartment complex on Old Bernal, near City Hall. Hopefully the local District Attorney will treat this chronic criminal appropriately and push for the most severe sentencing.

MSD and Qwerty how about we exact a little justice on those worthless punks ourselves? Clearly if Jonathan Fala is a repeat criminal he will be a drain on society for the rest of his useless life. I say he has had his third strike already so justice at the hands of his victims, or just volunteers, would be a good thing. Charging a fee that would go to the schools is a great idea. I don't favor a parcel tax but I would pay big time for the right to adjust his private parts with an old rusty knife.

During the last 5-10 years, I've witnessed a few after school fights (they kids all show up at a local park - 50 or more) where 2 kids are fighting and actually cheered on by both male and female high school students. There is a disconnection between the suffering of the "loser" of the fight and the kids. Very sad and I'm not a psychologist or sociologist, but it seems more vicious than when we were kids. Probably attributes to the increase in bullying at the schools, too. These problems are in every community for those that think they are in someone else's backyard.

The biggest problem with this is the parents probably refuse to believe it was their kids involved. Not my little angle...keep burying your heads in the sand. I have kids in high school and my wife works at one of the local schools -- the biggest issue with the coduct of some kids today is the inability of the parents to actual parent. They think we live in a plastic bubble and their kids would never, ever do anything wrong. Usually they find out when it's too late. We need to instill discipline in grammer school like the good old days. When I was growing up, very seldom did we have the problems which appear today.

To the comment, "What neighborhood would they have come from..." The Oakland comment; yes, statistics will reflect a higher crime rate in Oakland but whenever I read these threads I see this common theme that somehow we just don't get that crime happens in Pleasanton! I mean aren't all of our kids wholesome, happy, well adjusted and respectful of the law?! Hello.....this isn't Camelot folks and times are different than they were here even 10-20 years ago. In fact; my kid's teacher recently told me about a few kids from a very exclusive part of town who have been in more trouble and setting the worst examples for their younger siblings than you can imagine. Sometimes the most 'entitled' kids are the ones who feel they are exempt from the rules.... This type of activity can happen in any community lest we forget Columbine and other 'nice' little towns where teens have engaged in highly criminal activity. The fact that these 3 losers had to take out their own anger on a helpless victim is very frightening and speaks to what is going on or not going on in their upbringing as well. Yes, kids will end up as they end up but to say that we as parents share no part in their character building process is simply ignorant. I feel very sad for this teen victim; it must have been so frightening for him. These 3 animals need to be prosecuted to the full extent and the 16 year old I believe should be tried as an adult. Tongue in cheek, I'm with the comment about a public lynching....maybe bring back the public display of criminals....old west style...

Ptown Parent: I agree with you, especially the part about the 16 year old being tried as an adult. She will probably try for a plea deal and testify against her cohorts. The Oakland comment is a knee jerk reaction and has no basis for comparison with this terrible sickening crime. I'm a bit surprised these "individuals" didn't make a YouTube video of their activities. I don't think there's a need for lynching or public torture. Rest assured their new roommates for the foreseeable future will know what they did and will be just as sickened as we are.

Just awful, why didn't they just take turns shooting themselves with a BB Gun if they wanted to hurt someone...In the story 2 of the accused are 19, although still young adults the parents of these men can't completely be held responsible. As for the 16 year old girl, yes, parent, why are you letting your child hang out with college age kids. I do agree that Pleasanton is very much a plastic bubble, always has been. I have lived here 39 years and all that changes stays the same.

I am glad that these troubled people will be charged with torture and kidnapping as they hold a more harsh penalty than other charges.

Those photos show two individuals with facial expressions that do not show remorse, but "look what I did ma". Throw them in a cell with some hardened criminals and let them treat them like they treated this poor young man.

I'm still waiting to hear more about how much the girl was involved, but my guess is that they were all raised either by abusive, non-existant parents or perhaps by themselves like wolves. (oh wait, wolves are nicer).

These kind of guy's are weak and pathetic. They have to beat up on someone weaker than they are and two or more on one. These guy's would never start a fight with someone as strong or stronger than them, or if they were alone. I would love to get one of them alone and tape them crying and asking for mercy just to show it to all the people they have picked on. Hey Jonathan if you ever get out and want to prove me wrong just post it here (if you can read and write) and I will find you. To the kid they shot. If they have done this before (several times) you need to get some self confidence and find some new friends. These guy's are not worth your time.

This is very sad. These 2 young men (not teenagers) at 19 shooting a young disabled person? They are adults, and should be in jail for the maximum time allowed by law. The 16 year old girl is not yet an adult. It's not clear to me her involvement, but she needs help!! And constant supervision!!

I've known too many single Moms with teens that cannot adequately supervise their kids as they work long hours. The kids and the community suffer for it.

Between the suicide by train and now this, what is happening to our young people?

I wish we still had stockcades in the city square where we could all throw spitballs at them....would be kinder and gentler than standing this victim up by a tree pelting him in the neck, head, hands, etc.
Outrageous and disgusting....The 16 year old GIRL NEEDS severe punishment..no slap on the hands. Girls are TOO OFTEN MORE VICIOUS than BOYS USED to be !! WHO would even marry girls like this. I think we need to go back to teaching girls how to be proper ladies !! Sounds old doesn't it...but what kind of boys would be interested in girls like this. Academia has erased SHAME like they wanted to do...I say BRING BACK SHAME !!! MANNERS! and civility! I think REWARDING GOOD and SHAMING the BAD WORKS ! !

We moved from San Fran; to the Oakland Hills and then to Pleasanton several years ago on a recommendation from a friend. The climate here has changed significantly since then. I used to feel so safe here until the last couple of years when I've had to call the police about people coming in and out of our neighborhood who obviously were not from here; who were visiting another neighbor and some very seedy stuff going on. Yup, its coming our way.....no escape I guess; I'm thankful for the Pleasanton PD and Fire Dept. for taking every concern seriously and doing their best to keep our community safe.
I agree that it may be very difficult to parent for many who are just trying to survive by working many jobs, or are single parents. At 19 though, these young (do I dare to say 'men'?)know what is right and what is wrong....weak and pathetic losers....and the girl, she's just lost, caught up in it during a time where parenting 'could' make a difference.

This is so disturbing... what is happening with our kids? I am noticing as my kids get older the parental leash just keeps getting longer and longer in most cases. This is when we as parents need to be MORE aware and involved. Too many kids are being left to fend for themselves and wind up ruining their lives. Parents need to step up, AND as far as I'm concerned I believe cell phones need to be checked at the door after school unless they absolutely need it. Our youth are becoming stressed out and completely disconnected. Texting, AIM and such is just a portol into dangerous waters... I pray for the young man, and for these 3 horrible delinquents. How anyone could participate/witness such inhumane treatment of another is beyond my scope of thinking. It makes you wonder what kind of lives these 3 have had that led them on this path.

oh my gosh, my mind just can't comprehend how anyone could do such a thing. Just curious, the article describes the two EVIL 19 year-olds a described as teens, yet the 19 year victim was described as a 19-year old "man". I hope they get tried as men!

As far as I'm concerned those two males should not be called either men or teenx but Evil creatures. I don't even want to think about what they have done to animals in their past. While it is true that we can't predict what the outcome of our kids will be, even with the best of parenting, but in this case.. I give a lot of blame to the parents and would love to throw tomatoes at them just to get my anger in check. I wouldn't mind being on their jury when the trial comes!

The girl on the other hand may have been a horrible victim in all this, but since they arrested her, she certainly wasn't innocent. I can only hope the rest of their families are not the same.

There are lots of stressed out and disconnected kids everywhere, including in our own Tri-Valley. Yet these "teens" are the only ones shooting BB pellets at a mentally disabled person. This cowardly act shows cruelty and disregard for humanity beyond anybody's comprehension. I'd bet they have long rap sheets and were let go with slap on the wrists as punishment before. The main un-answered question is what to do with them? Seriously. Caning, castration, and deportation aside.

My heart goes out to the family of the victim and if the families of the evil stooges don't say that they are sorry to the poor victim, let me stand up as a fellow Pleasanton resident for them and say I am so sorry for what has happened. The thought of those all 3 of them going through our school system with our kids is un-nerving to me.

I don't want to break any laws, but I certainly hope the Pleasanton weekly publishes their court dates so I can make sure to tell them what I think of them, . . . Humiliating them for their behavior.
I know this is frowned upon and percieved child abuse, but my best friends and I can all recall a incident from our childhood that made us think twice in the future. Society is stupid if we allow bad behavior and turn away complacently expecting a resolution.

But, NOT for a SECOND should ANYBODY FORGET she is just as quilty.. Girls can be equally or more violent or scheming than guys...and should be treated equally. Oviously, she was not acting like a lady, and thus does not deserve exception because of SEX... 16 special treatment is because of age.
Any female that wants different treatment should ACT differently. A crime is a crime. She could have suggested the whole thing for all you know. Girls need to understand there are NO excuses & no free rides.

AVHS Dad,

I'll disagree with that. Thousands of years of human culture and there's always been some sort of adult-led coming-of-age ritual for both girls and boys. There was extensive training prior to such rituals to prepare for that journey. These children learned how to go from being a dependent to being a provider for themselves and their communities.

But don't misinterpret my words as some sort of defense for these "teens". My point is only that there's a lot more we as a society can do in raising our children to be upstanding adults.

Stacey: I agree that there are coming of age rituals that kick the kids out of the nest in various ways. However, once out of the nest it's a choice as to whether they want to be MEN or WOMEN. By that I mean responsible individuals.

As a 2008 graduate from Pleasanton, would you want your kid reading this conversation? It's okay to not be so judgmental all the time. You shouldn't be talking about things you know nothing about. Where do you think kids get it from? These are the most inappropriate comments to be making about anybody, regardless of the situation. I feel like I could make a website with all the dirty details with kids at the high schools and sell memberships.

These young men will probably get less than 6 months in the county fail. The case will be pled and they might even get probation and no jail time at all. Prison system is bankrupct and they are doing anything not to put more behind bars. We went to court two weeks ago with a perp who was on his second felony arrest in two years for assault to commit great bodily harm and he was referred to the youth authority for counseling.

Lee - I have a hard time swallowing your statement "I've known too many single Moms with teens that cannot adequately supervise their kids as they work long hours. The kids and the community suffer for it."

I bet these children DO NOT come from single parent households. I am a single mother (almost 15 years) and my son would NEVER do anything like this...

Just because a child is brought up in a 2 aprent family DOES NOT mean that they will be "good" or "bad"

I hope the authorities do not release any upcoming court date for these individuals. Appears they didn't release the story to the media until the arraignment had already taken place to avoid the mob mentality seen here. Listen to "Possibly Your Kid" and "Wow" because there's more to this unfortunate and sad incident that we don't know.

To Wow, the student from the Amador Valley High School community... this is even more sad of a story if you condone this kind of behaviour for any reason at all and if you feel that "snitching" gives someone the go ahead for these evil actions than I'm in horror to hear you are in the same school my children are in now. It does not matter if his mental disability was caused by drugs or if he did not have a disability, he is a person and this crime is horrendous.

As for the person who said this sounds more like something from Oakland, I agree that we hear more stories of something like this from Oakland, and unfortunately, we have become anesthetized to hearing about stories like that until the crime hits home and we become shocked. As we get used to more and more of this happening here, we will become less shocked unfortunatley as well.

I'd like to comment to the Student called Wow from Amador High Community - you have to be kidding, you think this is okay to do, and removing BB pellets from a person is okay? Your parents need to speak with you and since you obviously knew the people involved, did you know about all this happening before and did not do anything about it. This shocks me as much as the crime itself.

The victims mental disability was not drug induced. What's going on people, are you going to listen to high school children for your gossip info and believe them? WOW is obviosly friends with these idiots. Do not believe WOW. WOW just sounds like a confused child that has no idea what he or she is talking about.
The news paper had it correct. The victim is a non-violent man with no drug history. his mental disability is something that he was born with. These three scum bags took advantage of that and attacked and shot him. They had a history of doing this to this victim. They got off on it. For this they will see justice.

Well it is interesting to hear everyone’s comments. It seems the majority of the residents here in Pleasanton have an outspoken opinion on what has happened, and I agree it is almost unbelievable. Almost, for what Falan and Ramirez has done. I found it interesting when "Jim" posted that this Victim should get new friends I agree and have for many years. And as for "Pleasanton Mom" well your comment is interesting, what is a 16 year old doing hanging out with 19 year old immature men? [Portion removed because it is hearsay] And as for "Disgusted" on how this act of assault could have blinded the mentally impaired victim, well its too late for this man is already blind. Yes this is a case of "bully" meets mentally challenged and takes advantage of him.

Amazing, it's true you may not be able to 'control what your 16 yr old does or who they hangout with', those controls are installed at the age of 13, again at the age of 14, again at 15, and then they will more likely to sort out friends that also were 'installed' at 13, 14, & 15. All that matters is at 16 it's too late for excuses ! It also means as youngsters, they were not taught basic gun safety.... to NOT point even an EMPTY gun AT anyone !..so naturally at 16 it didn't bother them to POINT a loaded gun and REPEATEDLY shoot. The problem lies with adults that EXCUSE and rationalize bad behavior........sad to read such excuses.

to "in shock" to answer your question my dad was never home, my mom was a teacher for a private school near by and spent most of her time taking the family around the world to help build schools for third world countries, while most of you were probably sitting in hawaii or off in europe. then two years ago she died, my dad drinks and my brothers in jail.

but really, what does that have to do with anything? i was a member of leadership, played sports and graduated with a 4.0 and am off at school now. my point is, you guys know nothing about your neighbors, this isn't desperate housewives.

Those photos show two individuals with facial expressions that do not show remorse, but "look what I did ma". Throw them in a cell with some hardened criminals and let them treat them like they treated this poor young man."

WAKE UP! 16 year old girls have been HANGING OUT WITH 19 YEAR OLD GUYS FOR DECADES!

Coming from Palo Alto and Los Altos hills, more "educated" and "protected" communities and being raise by UBER Educated and INVOLVED PATENTS that had major VALUES and INTEGRITY, I will TELL you the following:

IF YOU are guarding, fallowing or forcing YOUR child NOT to hang out with 19 year old males, than YOU have already done the damage!

Sometimes the young folks that get involved with the "WRONG" people, ARE just that, "The WRONG people" Get it?

That being said, I have experienced a craziness, anger, attacks on personal choice and integrity" to the EXTREMED between school age PARENTS as a lately.
