Walnut Grove students help set new world record by jumping rope

Walnut Grove Elementary School third-grader Alexandra Greth and other students participate in an attempt to break the Guinness World's Record for "Most People Jumping Rope at the Same Time" Monday. Schools all over California participated in the record attempt coordinated by The California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

More than 85,000 people in California, including students from more than 85 Bay Area schools, jumped rope Monday morning in an attempt to break the world record of the most people jumping rope at the same time, organizers said.

The current record holder is Australia, which had 59,000 people jumping rope at the same time, according to Drisha Leggitt, executive director of the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Leggitt said she was confident that the record had been broken in California Monday, but the results won't be official until organizers have turned all documentation over to Guinness World Records for review.

As of Monday morning, there were 88,455 Californians registered to jump rope from 9 a.m. and 9:10 a.m., Leggitt said.

"The most important thing was that the kids had a great time," Leggitt said.

She said that one of the messages she hoped children would take from the event was that you don't have to be an athlete or have a lot of money to be physically active.

She also said that Guinness had agreed to adapt the definition of jumping rope to allow people with disabilities to participate, a requirement for organizers of Monday's jump.

The event, which was sponsored by in part by Jamba Juice, was organized by the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, a non-profit organization that works to promote health programs, physical education, recreation and dance throughout the state.
