Bay Area law enforcement made nearly 500 arrests for drunken driving in the first three days of a holiday crackdown, officials said Monday.
The 468 DUI arrests reported in the nine-county Bay Area between Friday and midnight Sunday were a drop from 2008 during the same three-day period, when law enforcement arrested 641 drivers, according to Jan Ford, spokeswoman for the Avoid campaigns in San Francisco and Alameda County.
The California Highway Patrol and local police will be conducting DUI enforcement operations on state highways and Bay Area roads through midnight on Jan. 3.
The CHP will stage its most strict enforcement operations from Dec. 24 through Dec. 27 and Dec. 31 through Jan. 3.
According to Ford, there has been one alcohol-related fatality in the Bay Area during this year’s enforcement period so far — in Napa County.
There were five alcohol-related road fatalities during the entire 17-day enforcement period last year, Ford said.
Santa Clara County has seen the most DUI arrests so far this enforcement period, with 177. Alameda County was second with 102 arrests.
