The Pleasanton Military Families Support Group, known for its boisterous welcome home celebrations for troops returning from service in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan, has honored one of its own--Chris Miller, who has stepped down as its president.
Miller and Alice Johnston, the mother of a Marine, started the group in 1990 and played a major role in a Tri-Valley parade in Hacienda Business Park welcoming local military men and women back from service during the first Gulf War. In early spring 2003, with Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan under way and nearly 100 from Pleasanton enlisting in the military or being deployed to the Iraqi front, Miller felt it was time to once again bring back the support group.
The organization started with a few families and over time almost 200 families have been involved. Among them was Pat Frizzell, who has been chosen to succeed Miller as head of the organization.
Miller, a Pleasanton Realtor, received a letter of commendation earlier this month from the Pleasanton City Council.
