ACE train hits truck in Lathrop, one person killed

Service to Pleasanton could see delays this morning

One person was killed early this morning when an Altamont Commuter Express train hit a vehicle in Lathrop.

The man was identified by the San Joaquin County Coroner's Office as Jeffrey Donald Walters, 48, of Stockton.

Train service on the ACE line was halted in the area although other commuter trains are being re-routed with some delays expected in Pleasanton.

Officials said the accident involved ACE train #1 which had about 43 passengers on board. Officials at ACE train said the passengers will eventually be transferred to a bus but for now are stuck on the train.

The accident happened in Lathrop near Roth Road and McKinley Avenue where the locomotive and five passenger-car train hit a pickup truck that had stopped on the tracks. The one fatality confirmed was riding in the truck although it is unclear if the victim was the driver or a passenger.
