DUI arrests up statewide so far for holiday weekend

Maximum enforcement by CHP runs through midnight tonight

The California Highway Patrol made 454 DUI arrests statewide during its maximum enforcement period for the first part of the July 4th holiday weekend, up from 342 DUI arrests at the same time last year, a sergeant said.

From 6 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. yesterday, five people hav been killed in DUI-related crashes statewide, three of which were on CHP-patrolled roadways, according to CHP Sgt. Trent Cross. That compared to four reported fatalities related to driving under the influence during the same period last year, Cross said.

The reporting period for maximum enforcement runs through 11:59 p.m. tonight.
