Westbound lanes on Hwy. 238 connector reopened after fatal crash

Motorcyclist killed after colliding with big rig in Castro Valley

A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on state Highway 238 this morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Both westbound lanes of state Highway 238 in Castro Valley reopened just before 1:30 p.m. today after being blocked by the crash for more than two hours.

The crash was reported around 11:15 a.m. when a motorcycle and big-rig collided just north of Interstate Highway 580, CHP Officer Kevin Kroncke said.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, Kroncke said. He did not know whether anyone in the big-rig was injured.

"He did not know whether anyone in the big-rig was injured."

That was a motorcycle vs. big rig, you say?

Right, let me check on that and get back to you.

You are so right: MOTORCYCLE VS. BIG RIG---- Should I bet money that the big rig driver is ok?

Does anyone know when the new lanes will open up on Hwy 238?

All snarky observations aside, yes, even big-rig drivers can be injured, their rigs severely damaged and other innocent drivers around them to be killed, when either cars or motorcycles pull fast, unpredictable and possible downright stupid moves, causing the truck driver to have to swerve (and possibly jack-knife) or slam on the brakes to avoid a collision.

Yes, for the most part, a run-in with a big-rig and a motorcycle will result in the motorcyclist taking the brunt of the injury and possibly his/her fatality. But please don't assume that the motorcyclist will be the *only* victim.
