Two men were charged Friday with multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism in connection with a series of highway shootings in Fremont over the last month, according to Alameda County Deputy District Attorney Danielle London.
London said Shawn Phillip Wagner of Mariposa and Rojelio Samuel Gomez of Fremont, both, 21, are scheduled to be arraigned at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Alameda County Superior Court in Fremont.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Trent Cross said authorities believe that Wagner and Gomez used a pellet gun in numerous shootings on Interstate Highway 680 between Mission Boulevard and Washington Street in Fremont.
The two men also are allegedly associated with nine isolated incidents on Interstate Highway 880, Cross said.
More than 40 drivers reported to the CHP that their vehicles had been struck over the last month on Highway 680 in the Fremont area. But there were no reports of serious injuries.
Wagner was arrested on Nicolet Avenue in Hayward about 8:30 p.m. Thursday and is being held at the Alameda County Jail in Dublin in lieu of $1.5 million bail.
Cross said Gomez was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail because he was arrested close to that facility but will be transferred to the Alameda County Jail soon. Gomez is being held in lieu of $1.34 million bail.
London said she filed 85 counts against both Wagner and Gomez. She said 42 of the charges are for felony assault with a deadly weapon and the other 43 charges are for both felony and misdemeanor vandalism.
