Hayward company's egg rolls recalled in salmonella outbreak

Product joins concerns over contamination of pistachio products

Egg rolls from a Hayward manufacturer are now being recalled after state health officials warned Tuesday they contain pepper associated with a recent salmonella outbreak.

California Department of Public Health officials advised consumers not to eat chicken egg rolls and vegetable egg rolls from EDS Wrap and Roll Foods, LLC.

The products are made with pepper already being recalled by Union International Food Co., of Union City.

The pepper has been associated with a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 48 people in four states, including 39 in Central and Northern California, according to the Department of Public Health.

Salmonella is known to cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain in healthy adults, and can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in infants and weak or elderly people, according to health officials.

State and federal health officials are also investigating recent salmonella contamination in pistachios and pistachio products.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials announced Tuesday the Central California company Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc., is expanding its recall of roasted pistachios to include all those produced from nuts harvested last year. The company is also recalling raw shelled pistachios from last year's crop that are not roasted prior to sale.

Consumers are advised not to eat pistachios or food products containing the nuts, such as baked goods and ice cream, unless they are found not to contain pistachios recalled by Setton.

What the heck is going on with all the salmonella outbreaks? A decade or so ago, such things were extremely rare. Now its a weekly occurance. The FDA and Department of Agriculture are totally asleep at the switch. I don't want to hear about they don't have enough resources. Pay a visit to Washington, DC during the work week to get a first-hand look at broken, lagardly bureaucracy. We really need some more Ronald Reagan style firings ala the air traffic controllers.

I think it's all the illegal aliens. They just aren't washing their hands after going to the bathroom or driving drunk.
