Get your heart going today at Stoneridge Mall

American Heart Association hosts 1-mile walk around shopping center to observe National Start Walking Day

The American Heart Association will host an event today to celebrate National Start Walking Day at the Stoneridge Shopping Center.

The festivities will kick off at noon with a walk around a 1-mile walking path inside the mall. Check in is at the Grand Court near the elevator. National Start Walking Day is a nationwide call to action for people to adopt a healthy lifestyle, with five events including the Pleasanton one occurring in the Bay Area. April 5-11 is National Workplace Wellness Week.

According to the American Heart Association, walking can not only be a step in the right direction for a more heart-healthy life but also a major stride toward reining in health-care costs, absenteeism and lost productivity for companies.

The heart association estimates that some adults may gain as many as two hours of life expectancy for every one hour of regular, vigorous exercise, such as very brisk walking. Anyone can join the Start! walking program by logging on to MyStart! online and downloading a walking plan, available in beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.
