In its sixth year, the Pleasanton Unified School District and the Pleasanton Police Department will join to bring the “Every 15 Minutes” program to Amador Valley High School tomorrow. The anti-DUI program, which derives its name from the frequency at which a person is killed in an alcohol or drug related collision in the United States, is designed to teach young adults about the dangers and consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Part of the program involves a mock fatal traffic collision where young adults will be “killed” in a DUI crash. The simulation will take place at 11 a.m. today on Del Valle Parkway adjacent to the high school. Paramedics, firefighters and police officers are instructed to handle the mock crash as if it were real. Juniors and seniors will observe the emergency crews in action and witness the arrest of the intoxicated driver.

In order to facilitate the collision, police are closing part of Del Valle Parkway between Main Street and Harvest Road and detouring traffic from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents in the area will be allowed to and from their homes. During this time, those in the area will see numerous emergency vehicles and may hear sirens. The California Highway Patrol will also be landing their helicopter to transport an “injured” party to the hospital.

A follow-up assembly will be held at the school’s gym on Wednesday and will not include street closures.
