(January 20, 2006) Toxic trash?
Poisons, lead-based paints, old batteries and more are a no-no for regular trash pickup. Now and for the next six months, Pleasanton residents who want to safely dispose of certain toxic or hazardous trash can take it to the Livermore disposal facility operated by Alameda County. The household hazardous waste disposal program, run by the county's Waste Management Authority and Department of Environmental Health, will open the Livermore facility on specified Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
With proof of residence in the county (driver's license, utility or tax bills), those interested can have such trash removed from back seats of cars or trunks at 5584 La Ribera St. Not accepted will be computers and monitors, asbestos, appliances, medical waste, railroad ties and more. For more information on when the disposal facility will be open and which wastes it will take, visit www.household-hazwaste.org or call (800) 606-6606.
Seasonally sad
Those who've experienced the death of a loved one may find any holiday season particularly tough. Hope Hospice Children and Family Grief Support Services has new classes starting next week. Beginning Jan. 26, children ages 5-17 and those ages 9-12 will meet for eight weeks at Hope Hospice, 6500 Dublin Blvd., Suite 214, and the teen group begins Jan. 25. The orientation for parents and guardians will be from 7-8:30 Jan. 24. There is no fee, but donations are welcome. To schedule an appointment or for more information, call 829-8770.
Attention: Starving artists
Practicing professional artists in Pleasanton are invited to submit artwork for consideration for display in county buildings in Hayward and Oakland. The county has budgeted $95,000 for purchase of selected works. The annual artwork purchase program requires that works be designed for wall display and that the price be included in the application. Applications must be postmarked on or before Jan. 31. This year, art chosen will be displayed in Hayward's Courthouse Square Building in Hayward, and, in Oakland, the county clerk-recorder's office and county social services agency. Minority, women and disabled artists are encouraged to apply. For more information, visit www.acgov.org/arts/artists, call (510) 208-9646, or e-mail artcommission@acgov.org.
