(January 13, 2006) What do you think about backyard chickens?
Asked at Safeway on Santa Rita Rd..
Aaron Seyer
Livermore
I don't think chickens should be a big problem; I don't think they are that big of a nuisance. I think people might be required to have a certain amount of land, so you wouldn't house them in a small backyard too close to neighbors.
Michael Vayder
Vintner Way
People should keep chickens on farms and not in small backyards. Chickens should be free and on farmlands. Chickens make lots of noises and people would be annoyed with them.
Ramesh Menon
Golden Road
As long as it's controlled and there are appropriate health precautions taken, it's OK. I don't think there are many chickens around, and don't want to deny the rights of those who want them as pets.
Sheri Moore
Whitney Drive
Chickens would be an interesting pet for children, and give them the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to be responsible for the pet. However, I don't think I'd like a chicken living next door to me.
Jason Farrar
Churchill Drive
I think it is appropriate. Often-times children enjoy them as pets, and culturally, Pleasanton has agricultural roots, that's our heritage, and we should be true to it. A few years ago, this wouldn't have been an issue.
