Baby left at ValleyCare

A healthy newborn baby boy was left with emergency personnel at the ValleyCare Medical Center last Friday at 7:40 a.m. The person who dropped off the baby said she was the mother and that she gave birth to the baby at 7 a.m. that morning, police said. The baby had no known medical problems, but will remain hospitalized for observation pending placement into foster care.

A parent is allowed to drop off an infant up to 72 hours old at a safe-surrender without fear of prosecution under the state's child endangerment laws. Hospital emergency rooms and fire stations where personnel are on duty are sanctioned as safe-surrender sites. Christmas eve break in

A laptop and digital camera were stolen from an apartment in the 4300 block of Valley Avenue some time between 1:30 p.m., Dec. 24 and 5:30 p.m., Dec. 25, police said. The two items have a total value of $2,500. The victim left his ground level unit in a four unit building, locking the latch and the deadbolt to the front door. The blinds on the sliding glass door were partially open, making the interior of the apartment visible from the front patio, police said. The laptop was left on the floor in the front room and the digital camera was on the top shelf of the bedroom closet, according to the victim.

When the victim returned on Dec. 25, he noticed something wrong with the latch, but the deadbolt was not broken. The apartment was not disturbed or ransacked, police said. A large sum of money in the victim's bedroom dresser and the printer to the digital camera on the opposite side of the closet was not taken.
