Students learn about segregation
(December 09, 2005) Kerel Cain, a senior in the Foothill High School Leadership Academy, tells students about the Civil Rights Movement while inside a bus recreated to look like a Montgomery, Ala. bus in the 1950s. The activity, held Thursday, Dec. 1 on the Foothill quad, was organized to honor the anniversary of the day Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus, an event that sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycotts and gave momentum to the Civil Rights Movement. Students from the Leadership Academy sat on the bus -- whites in front, blacks in back -- while students toured it during their lunch break. "We felt people at the school were not getting what the experience was like, so we wanted to show it to them," said John Kurhanewicz, one of the student organizers of the event.
