Jennifer Narum Signs to University of Virginia
(December 09, 2005) Seahawks senior recruited for several schools
Jen Narum, a senior at Foothill High School and member of the Pleasanton Seahawks USA swim team, has signed to the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. After recruiting efforts from University of Michigan, University of North Carolina and Purdue University, Jen decided on UVA, "simply because it was the best fit for me." She was also attracted to UVA because it is tied with Berkeley as the #1 public university in America. UVA is currently ranked 13 or 14 in the NCAA preseason rankings for women's swimming, but Jen thinks that will change as the season progresses.
Jen was recruited for her swimming performance at the national level, but her academic performance -- she has a 3.8 grade point average -- also played a role. She had to academically qualify for admissions before she was invited out for an official trip to the school. However, her swimming performance during the past three years primarily attracted UVA to Jen. She is currently ranked in the top five in the 800 and 1500 Free for her age group in the U.S. and is ranked in the top 45 in the world in the 1500 Free. Jen has already qualified for the Olympic Trials in 2008 in the 1500 Free.
The Seahawks will have to settle on seeing Jen during her breaks when she officially becomes a Cavalier, or as Jen indicates the locals like to call the athletes, a Wahoo.
