Non-league play shows team set for three-peat in EBAL

by Jeb Bing

The Amador Valley varsity boys soccer Dons, the two time defending EBAL champions, opened their quest for a three-peat EBAL title as they were the hosts in non-league soccer action last week at Val Vista Soccer Park.

In the first game, the Dons scored first in the game with Hayward at the 15:00 minute mark of the first half as Ross Smith sent a long ball to forward Evan Sherwood, who took the pass and did the rest as he planted the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Hayward came back at 19:21 and used one-touch passing to tie the score at 1-1. At the 25th minute of the match, Amador was called for a trip in the box and Hayward was awarded a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Jesse Takens played the kick perfectly and stopped the ball from going into the net, keeping the score tied. The score remained 1-1 until late in the second half when at 71:23 Carson Kvaternik one-touched a loose ball and slammed it past the stunned Hayward keeper and put the Dons up 2-1. The Dons defense held for the last 8 minutes and Amador came away with a hard fought victory.

Later, the Dons returned to the fabled pitch as Zac Ulher took a one-touch pass from Jeff Squier to lead the Dons to a 1-0 victory over Washington High.

Both teams had great opportunities to score in the evening but each time the defenses stood tall and prevented the ball from crashing the net. In the second half, the Amador offense mounted run after run but were turned back by the strong Washington's defense. Finally at 70:19, the Dons broke through, with Ulher putting the ball into the back of the net. From there the Dons defense, led by goalkeepers Ross Smith and Takens, shut down the Huskie offense, for a 2-0 performance in non-league play.
