JV Dons outlast Mustangs 24-21 JV Dons outlast Mustangs 24-21 (November 11, 2005)

Fast-moving game keeps both teams running

After stopping the Monte Vista Mustangs on their initial possession, The Amador Valley Dons Junior Varsity football team struck quickly for their first touchdown, then going on to a 24-21 victory.

It started when Pat Espiritu hit Nick Vuoto with a wide receiver screen on a first and 10 from the 20 yard line following a Mustangs punt into the end zone. Vuoto found a seam in the defense and outraced the Mustang defenders 80 yards to the end zone, then kicked the extra point to put the Dons up 7-0 two minutes into the game.

When the Amador Valley offense took over again, it scored its second touchdown in just 13 plays, to make the score 14-0 nine seconds into the second quarter.

Just when it seemed the momentum was all in Amador Valley's favor, the Mustangs put together an 80 yard drive, mixing the run and pass effectively with a touchdown pass and subsequent extra point cut the Dons' lead to 14-7. Then, when the Mustangs regained possession later in the half, a Mustangs receiver leaped over a Dons defender to corral a second touchdown pass. Just like that the two teams entered the locker room tied at 14 each.

In the second half, both teams put together hard drives and strong defenses, with the Dons taking a 24-21 lead to end the game. - Jeb Bing
