Driver dies in big rig accident Driver dies in big rig accident (November 11, 2005)

Firefighters clear the wreckage from a fatal big rig accident that occurred early Monday morning near the Sunol Boulevard-Castlewood Drive exit on northbound I-680 and closed two lanes of traffic until 9:15 a.m. The big rig struck a guard rail at 6:15 a.m. and went down an embankment, hitting a pillar and bursting into flames. The accident sparked a grass fire, which firefighters had under control by 6:45 a.m. The driver's identity is still unknown and the severity of the fire may mean dental records will have to be used to make a positive identification. The cause of the accident is also still unknown, but it is believed the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
