(October 21, 2005) Pure Girls raises funds for breast cancer
Pure Girls, a clothing shop in downtown Pleasanton, is raising funds throughout the month of October for breast cancer research. The store is selling bracelets, key chains and bookmarks and all the proceeds will go to City of Hope, a biomedical research institution. Jennifer Kim and Naomi Yoo, two seniors from Amador Valley High School, will be holding a book signing in the store Saturday, Oct. 21. The two wrote and illustrated a children's book, "Where is the Red Dragon's Egg," which teaches children about cancer through a fairy tale.
Pure Girls is also collecting donations of new or gently used dolls in the month of November. Girls donating used dolls are encouraged to attach a story about the doll. The dolls will be donated to children in distressed situations and survivors of Hurricane Katrina. When girls bring in the dolls they will be given a small trinket in appreciation. Pure Girls is located at 660 Main St.
Red Ribbon Week
Schools in the district will observe Red Ribbon Week Oct. 24-Oct. 28. The goal of the week is to encourage children to choose lives free of drug and substance abuse. The week is a national event and has traditionally been held during the fourth week of October. The Pleasanton Police Department works with the schools to fund and run the event with activities planned at all the schools in the district, including visits from the canine officers and assemblies lead by DARE officers.
