Walter Louis Wermes

Walter Louis Wermes died August 4 after a battle with asbestosis related cancer at the age of 80.

He was born August 20, 1925 in Chicago and was one of 13 children. He served in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during WWII. He also was a Teamster for 41 years, working for Locals 85 and 70.

He was an avid bowler and after his retirement was part of several bowling leagues and tournaments and won many awards in the seniors division. He was known for his keen sense of humor and quick wit.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gloria Wermes of Pleasanton; daughters Cynthia McAlpine of Los Alamos, N.M. and Jerry Pamela Fitzgerald-Wermes of Pleasanton; five sisters; two brothers; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arnold Ellison Beck, a Pleasanton resident for 19 years, died August 5 at the age of 87.

He was born April 2, 1918 in McKinley, Minn. and later lived in Richfield, Conn. For 29 years. He earned a bachelor's degree from New York University and served in the U.S. Army. He was a parishioner at St. Philip Lutheran Church in Dublin and his hobbies were electronics and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Grace Beck of Pleasanton; daughter Carole Ann Beck of Mountain View; brother John Beck of Gilbert, Minn.; sister Edna Carlson of Virginia, Minn.; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Beck.

Funeral services were held at St. Philip Lutheran Church with burial at Memory Gardens in Livermore. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 7000 Village Parkway, Ste. E, Dublin, CA 94568. Donald J. Blair

Donald J. Blair died August 6 at the age of 67.

He enjoyed golfing and hunting. He loved country music and is remembered for being a great dancer. He was also an avid A's and 49ers fan.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathleen Blair of Pleasanton; daughters Catherine Murphy of Austin, Texas and Donna Blair of Merced; son Vincent Blair of Oakland; and one granddaughter.
