Avoid the 21 sees increase in Independence Day arrests
(July 08, 2005) Arrests for driving under the influence (DUI) during the holiday weekend were slightly more than last year in Alameda County, increasing from 120 arrests last year to 122 this year, according to police. Across Alameda County, police departments were cracking down on intoxicated drivers as part of the Avoid the 21. The nine-county program joins police departments in strictly enforcing DUI laws. The Independence holiday crackdown began July 1 and ended Monday. Another crackdown will be enforced during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

(July 08, 2005) The Crime Prevention Unit of the Pleasanton Police Department compiled the following list of crime prevention tips to help residents protect themselves and their property during the summer vacation season and all year long.
Vacation Security
¥ When you are gone, make your house look lived in.
¥ Put lights, television or radio on timers.
¥ Leave a car in the driveway if possible.
¥ Turn down the ringer on your telephone.
¥ On your answering machine, do not have the message reflect that you are on vacation.
¥ Have a trusted friend or neighbor keep an eye on your house when you are gone on vacation.
Vehicle safety
¥ Lock the car doors every time you park the car regardless of where you park.
¥ Roll windows up completely.
¥ Use extra security features if you have them (alarms, club-type devices, kill switches, etc.
¥ Do not leave garage door openers in your car if they are parked outside your home.
¥ Do not leave personal items in cars (purses, computers, cell phones, etc.).
¥ If you ride a bicycle, lock it or take it inside the house or garage.
Residential Safety
¥ Keep doors and windows locked.
¥ Set house alarms when not home.
¥ Pick up newspapers and mail daily.
¥ If you have a yard, keep it neat. Make your house look lived-in.
¥ If you need to leave a spare key, leave it in a secure location or with a trusted family member or friend.
¥ Keep the outside of your house lit (front porch lights, exterior lights or motion sensors, etc.)
¥ Lock you mailbox and do not label it with your name. If you must label the mailbox, use last name and first initial only.
