Letters Letters (May 06, 2005)

60 years since VE Day

Editor,

This weekend marks the 60th anniversary of VE Day. I want to express my deep appreciation to all of you for your efforts and courage so many years ago to end the scourge that was Hitler's Europe. My mom was with the Dutch resistance and my father, like so many male youths at the time, was forced to work in a German factory. Had you not liberated my parents, I wouldn't be here today. I can not express my thanks sufficiently.

On Memorial Day, I am an organizer of a visit by two WWII aircraft (a B-17 and a B-24) at the Livermore Airport. As a humble expression of my thanks, I invite all WWII veterans and women of the home front during WWII to visit these aircraft free of charge. Mick Hanou Sandpiper Way Favors Arkin for Council

Editor,

Recent coverage of Pleasanton's three City Council candidates reveals remarkable similarities regarding how they will vote on key issues facing the city, How do we differentiate among them and decide for whom to vote? Easy, by experience.

Pleasanton faces many important questions: How do we respond to meddling regional groups like ABAG who demand Pleasanton build housing we have no room for? How do we protect our streets from becoming freeway-alternative routes for commuters? How do we ensure that Pleasanton traffic flows smoothly while preserving the quality-of-life for those who live along high traffic streets?

This is why I support Brian Arkin for City Council. A two-term Planning Commissioner, Arkin knows the history of these issues, and has a voting record to match the principles he stands for; he opposed the West Las Positas interchange and the Stoneridge extension; voted against the water park expansion; he voted for senior affordable housing, and created an initiative to make Bernal Park reflect the public's vision.

Already extremely knowledgeable on issues the City Council faces, Mr. Arkin will have no learning curve to surmount. I encourage Pleasantonians to vote for the only candidate with a public record of upholding the ideas he has outlined. Sheri Scarborough Pleasanton
