Amador baseball opens with a 'classic' win Amador baseball opens with a 'classic' win (April 01, 2005)

Pitcher takes mound mastery to new level with no-hitter

by Lori Nielsen

Amador Valley High's varsity boys baseball team opened play Saturday in the Willie Stargell Memorial Easter Classic with a 10-0 thumping of Will C. Wood High. David Rowse took his mound mastery to a new level by tossing a no-hitter in the game, which was shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule. Craig Sewall keyed Amador's six-run uprising in the third inning with a bases-loaded triple.

The Dons offense erupted in the bottom of the third, sending 11 batters to the plate en route to scoring six runs. After Stephen Gatehouse led off with a walk, Pat Glenn roped a one-out triple into the right field corner to put the Dons on the board. Glenn then scored on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Brett Zollman. Matt Rossignol punched a single through the right side and Mike Purpura walked, to load the bases for Sewall, who lined a 3-2 pitch over the head of the Wood center fielder for a triple to deliver the runners. Brian Riotoc followed with a single to score Sewall, and the Dons led 6-0 after three.

The Dons added a run in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by Riotoc, then finished off the win with three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a couple of Wood errors and a double by Rob Learned.

Rowse was near perfect on the mound, using only 53 pitches on the game and allowing just one batter to reach base. Rowse promptly erased that runner with one of his patented pickoff moves.
Girls Softball

Foothill's JV softball team took two games at the LeDoux JV Softball Tournament in Roseville recently. In the first game against Sheldon High the Falcons came from behind in the bottom of the seventh for an International Tie Breaker when Lexi Schvaneveldt drove in Claire Robertson running for Brea Hoffmann who had led off the inning with a double. Sheldon was unable to score in the top of the eighth though they had bases loaded with one out. Catrina Cruger threw out one runner at home for the second out, and pitcher Jessica Seitz struck out the final batter to end the inning. In the bottom of the eighth, the Falcons were able to load the bases, and Jennifer Vincent punched a hit through the infield to win the game. Jessica Seitz went the distance with 21 strikeouts. Catcher Hoffman went 3 of 3.

In the second game Foothill went on a hitting spree with 11 total hits including four doubles. Jennifer Flaming had two doubles, with Vincent and Hoffman each adding a double of their own. Seitz went five innings, pitching nine strikeouts and giving up no walks. Their remaining games were rained out.
Boys Golf

In windy conditions at Las Positas, the Foothill golf team defeated Granada 221 to 186. Three Falcons managed under-par rounds in the afternoon match. The team was led by junior Tyler Galbraith, shooting 33; sophomore Eric Pitcaithley finished with a two under-par 34; followed by freshman Anthony Machi with a score of 35. Also playing in the match were Brian Robinson, J.W. Miller and Brandon Ralph for the Falcons.

The Falcons face up against rival Amador on Tuesday, April 5, at Ruby Hill.
Track & Field

The Amador Valley Distance Team had a fine showing at the Piedmont Distance Festival recently. Ben DeLand paved the way with a 9:45.9 two-mile race. In addition, Morgan Helms turned in a notable effort by finishing first in her 800-meter heat. Helms got out to an early lead and never looked back.
