(March 18, 2005) Foothill girls come out on top at National Cheerleading Championship
by Lori Nielsen
The Foothill competitive cheer squads proved that they can be counted among the best at the USA National Cheerleading Championship held recently in Anaheim. The National Championship title was earned by the Foothill stunt group, who competed against 56 teams. This is the first time that a Foothill stunt group qualified to compete in the finals and the first National Championship title earned by any Foothill Cheerleaders. Fantastic performances were given by team members Alyssa Graziani, Ashley Beckman, Ali Carrion, Lauren Ofstedahl and Jenni Smith.
Falcon pride and skill was evident as the varsity squad earned a second-place trophy in the Medium (13-16 cheerleaders) Advanced Show Cheer Category. Congratulations to team members Mandy Adler, Ashley Beckman, Nicky Cohen, Katie Froelich, Alyssa Graziani, Jen Holy, Kelly Ling, Jamie Michaelides, Lauren Ofstedahl, Krissa Partridge, Caitlin Reed, Jenni Smith, Andrea Spindler, Lisa Stephens, Sam Voss and Natalie Vultaggio.
Boys Baseball
The Foothill varsity baseball team had its third straight win of the season finishing off Pittsburg 8-0. The boys were led by the effort of Corey Conflenti, who threw five innings giving up just two hits, and Dan Buffington, who went the last two striking out five of the Pittsburg hitters. At the plate Brandon Crawford had two hits including another home run, Willie Keck went 3-3 with two RBIs, and two runs, and Tony Smith went 2-3 with a second-base hit and an RBI as well.
The varsity Amador Dons remained unbeaten with a 3-0 victory Friday on the road against the Castro Valley Trojans. Rob Learned went the distance on the mound for Amador's first complete game of the year, scattering five hits and two walks for the shutout. The Dons got on the board in the top of the first, when Learned had a soaring triple over the Castro Valley right fielder, scoring Nate Young from first base. In the fifth, Jacob Zucker led off with a single. He was sacrificed on a Chris Grider bunt; Stephen Gatehouse singled putting runners at the corners. Young then walked to load the bases. One out later, Pat Glenn was drilled in the back with a fastball to force Zucker home. Then Brett Zollman walked on four pitches to plate Gatehouse and give the Dons a 3-0 lead.
Girls Lacrosse
Amador's JV lacrosse girls had a decisive win against Davis, 11-1. The Don's non-stop assault on the net earned them 11 goals made by Kim Learned, Amanda Nespor, Ariel Wang, Cara Padilla-Nalagan, Kerry McCulloch and Ashley Royer. Powerful offense was played by Katie Carlstrom and Sarah Moellering. Forceful defense was played by Emma Bones, Bailey Madnick and goalie Jules Narlock.
The Foothill JV ladies completely dominated the field during their first East Bay Athletic League game of the season, soundly defeating Monte Vista, 18-2. The Falcons kept the Mustangs goalie busy trying to deflect some of the 18 goals. Goalie Amanda Gomes made numerous saves when Monte Vista was able to get through the Falcon defense.
Boys Golf
Amador Valley boys had a strong start to the EBAL golf season with a win over Granada, 198-234. Tony Guerrero led the Dons with a 37, followed by Mike Ortega and Jay Guilmart at 38, Kirk Laffins at 41, and Jeff Thomas at 44. The Dons next took on very strong Monte Vista. Although the Dons improved their team score by two strokes, Monte Vista came out on top, winning the match 189-196. Amador was led again by Guilmart (38), followed by Guerrero (39), Jeff Thomas (39), Kirk Laffins (39), and Ortega (41).
Boys Volleyball
The Foothill varsity boys volleyball team brought home first place in the Davis Tournament last weekend. The Falcons, led by the play of Pat Young and Joey Ballesteros, pounded through the tournament unbeaten in pool play against four teams, all in 2-0 games.
In the quarterfinals they beat Sacred Heart, 2-0. They lost one game but still advanced to the championship game. Foothill claimed the title when it swept Nevada Union, 2-0. Ballesteros was named the most valuable player of the tournament. Young was voted to the all-tournament team.
