(March 11, 2005) Fundraiser for cancer victim
A fundraiser is planned for Thursday, St. Patrick's Day, to help pay the cost of chemotherapy and other treatments for Kristin Welding Beyer, 26, an Amador Valley High School graduate who is currently undergoing costly treatments for breast cancer. The benefit, to be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at Tenuta Vineyards, 633 Kalthoff Commons in Livermore, is being held by her mother Nancy Welding, a longtime Pleasanton resident.
Donations of $25 are requested, which will help pay for the estimated $10,000 in medical bills Beyer and her husband Ryan, a college student, are facing. More information can be obtained by calling Nancy Welding at 606-9500 or by e-mailing n.welding@comcast.net.
ACE reduces fares
The Altamont Commuter Express is reducing all fares by approximately 10 percent for a two-month period that begins Tuesday after riders were inconvenienced by delays in the system during the first couple of months of 2005.
Storms in Southern California caused Union Pacific trains to be rerouted, which impacted ACE trains. ACE makes three daily runs from Stockton to San Jose in the morning and three return trips in the afternoon.
Science on display
The ninth annual Tri-Valley Science and Engineering Fair will be held Wednesday through Saturday at the San Ramon Valley Conference Center, 3301 Crow Canyon Road, San Ramon. The fair, open to seventh- through 12th-grade students attending public, private or parochial schools in Pleasanton, Danville, Dublin, Livermore, San Ramon and Sunol, challenges students to apply creativity and critical thought to solve science, engineering and math problems.
Science projects are judged on a wide range of criteria that represent standards of research held by the scientific community, with local scientists, engineers and science teachers serving as judges. Judging will take place at 8 a.m. Thursday, with an awards ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m. that night. The public can view the exhibits without charge from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
