Undefeated Lady Dons shoot the hoops tonight in semi-finals Undefeated Lady Dons shoot the hoops tonight in semi-finals (March 04, 2005)

NCS finals at stake, as well as Northern California playoffs

by Lori Nielsen

The undefeated Amador Valley Lady Dons varsity basketball team will be playing the winner of the Newark Memorial/Berkeley quarter-final game, at home tonight, starting at 7:30 p.m. As the No. 2 seed, Amador was able to secure the home court for this important semi-final game. The winner not only goes to the North Coast Section Finals on Saturday but is assured a spot in the Northern California playoffs.

In the final league game at home against Foothill, the Dons soundly defeated the Falcons 80-52. The Amador team was absolutely raining 3-point shots to the basket. Leah Munley scored a total of 26 points, but the key was that 18 of those points were from 3-point shots. That in itself was pretty spectacular but the fact that she did it with only eight attempts makes it remarkable. Rumor has it that it is an East Bay Athletic League record.

Right on Leah's heels was Sara VanderHorst with 25 points. Sara put in 4 for 6 of her 3-pointers including one at the half time buzzer. Kristen Hart chipped in 15 points.
Boy's Basketball

Both the Amador Valley and Foothill varsity basketball teams earned spots in the NCS playoffs, after ending their season tied for third place in the EBAL. The Falcons faced Berkeley and the Don's went up against No. 1 seed Newark Memorial on Wednesday night after press time. The playoffs are this weekend.
Boy's Golf

The Amador Dons golf team, beat Bishop O'Dowd early last week then headed over to Sequoyah Country Club in Oakland for a rematch Thursday. Unfortunately, the Bishop O'Dowd team prevailed, winning the match 195-202.

It was a wet, sloppy day but the boys still managed to score their best team score at Sequoyah in the last five years. Senior Jeff Thomas and Junior Mike Ortega led the Dons, both posting a score of 37. They were followed by Tony Guerrero at 39, Jay Guilmart at 44, and Kirk Laffins at 45. This leaves the Dons with a record of 1-1 in preseason.
Boy's Lacrosse

The Amador varsity boys lacrosse team had a big win over Redwood High, emerging victorious with a convincing 12-6 final score. This was not your normal Friday night home game for the Dons. The game had to be played at Foothill's field due to lighting problems at Amador. In addition Redwood plays a zone defense, which requires lots of ball movement but not a lot of shooting and scoring.

To the Don's credit, scoring 12 goals against this defensive setup was a huge success. Several big hits facilitated a very busy penalty box and required some excellent man-down play by Amador including successfully killing a two-man down situation for over a minute. When it was all said and done, Amador emerged victorious with a convincing 12-6 final.
Boy's Tennis

Foothill participated for the first time in the Richards/Kelly Memorial Boys Tennis Tournament, taking third and sixth in doubles. Krishan Sharma and Henry Liu took third place with a 4-1 record, having only lost to the eventual winner of the doubles tournament. Brandon Hoang and Nikail Jain were the runners-up in the consolation bracket with a 4-2 record. Tommy Cech and Scott Jenn lost to Foothill's own No. 2 doubles team in the quarter-finals of the consolation and finished with a 3-2 record.

In singles, Chris Sumerlin finished sixth with a 3-2 record, losing two close three-set matches at the end of each tournament day.
