Amador sophomore wrestler Lauren Neves is heading to her second girls state wrestling championship in Vallejo today and tomorrow after taking first place in her weight class last weekend at the sectional championships in San Leandro.
This is the second year for the Amador girls wrestling team coached by Joe Rose, former wrestling coach at Harvest Park Middle School. According to Rose, Neves has a great shot at making it in the state finals.
"I think that if she wrestles in Vallejo like I know she can, she should get to finals," said Rose, who has coached Neves since she was in sixth grade.
Last year, Neves was the North Coast Section champion and placed fourth in the state finals in the 114-pound weight class. Now at 108 pounds, Neves is wrestling at the top of her weight class, which should give her an edge.
Teammate Jenna Boyovich, wrestling in her first full season for Amador in the 138-pound class, just missed going to the state finals.
"Jenna is in the toughest weight class and her competitors have two years experience on her, but I expect her to do well next year," said Rose.
Amanda Wong, new to the team of three, broke her leg during a wrestling match and will sit out the rest of the season.
Girls wrestling is relatively new to the East Bay Athletic League. Though there are girl wrestlers at many of the EBAL schools, Amador is the only school with an official team and dedicated coach. Most competitions take place in tournaments with teams from all over California with upwards of 300 girls competing in a single tournament.
"In California, there are more girls wrestlers who don't know about all the tournament opportunities, and many high school coaches just aren't into it," commented Rose. "Over the last few years, the sport has really progressed with quite a few girls out there who could beat the boys."
And it's a hot sport for colleges, said Rose. "The college recruiters are coming out now to see the girls compete," he said. "It's big at Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and locally at Menlo College that has a big team. Scholarship opportunities in the sport are huge."
Girls Soccer
After a bit of a slow start, Foothill's varsity girls soccer team shut out Amador 3-0. Akayla Fischer scored the first goal for Foothill when Amador's goalie keeper came out and failed to clear the ball.
In the second half, the Falcons came out strong and never gave the Dons a chance at the game. Valerie Arioto scored following a kick from Naomi Lambert. Erin Wylie found herself in front off the net and drove a bullet for the final goal. As of the end of the first half of the season, Foothill's record is 3-2-2 and Amador is 3-3-1 in league.
Girls Basketball
The Lady Dons varsity basketball team remained undefeated at 4-0 in EBAL following its 63-37 defeat of California last Friday. Sara Vanderhorst led the charge for the Dons, scoring 19 points. Leah Munley also drove up the score, contributing 13 points with three 3-pointers. Kristen Hart with 8 points, Whitney Metz (6), Elyssa Thome and Ashlee Stephens (4), and Julie Brodnick with a 3-pointer added to the win.
Girls Frosh Basketball
Foothill freshmen girls basketball team defeated Monte Vista 38-26 behind Shannon Little and Jennifer Flaming's offense, and Caitlin Yaniec and Maria McGlinchy's defense. Scoring for Foothill were Little with 14 points, Flaming (11) and Yaniec (6). Sarah Ashraf, Meg Haupt, Brooke Miller, Ashley Ramos and Sammie Mash played well coming off the bench to get the win.
