(January 07, 2005) Habitat for Humanity gearing up for Tri-Valley work
by Dolores Fox Ciardelli
Habitat for Humanity will begin its orientation sessions tomorrow for applicants for the homes it is building at the corner of East and Hayes avenues in Livermore. Six very-low income families living or working in Livermore will be chosen in this round for the 22-home development and will help with the building, along with other volunteers.
"Each applying family must attend one orientation, the first of which is on Saturday, Jan. 8," said Patti Wang, development and marketing associate for East Bay Habitat for Humanity.
The development, known as Freeda Court, is the second "green build" for the Habitat. It will have three- and four-bedroom homes built with an energy-efficient design. The court's common area will have a landscaped open space.
The homes also incorporate environmentally sustainable building techniques and materials, from engineered lumber that uses half the wood fiber as conventional lumber to photovoltaic arrays that convert sunlight to electricity.
The single-family homes are being sold at an affordable price through a 30-year no-interest mortgage. Each family selected is required to contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" volunteering.
Orientation meetings are being held at Asbury United Methodist Church, 4743 East Ave. in Livermore at the following times:
¥ 10 a.m. and noon, Saturday, Jan. 8
¥ 10 a.m. and noon, Saturday, Jan. 15
¥ 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 20
Applications will be given out at the orientation meetings.
